Aggie rugby teams do well in tourney The Texas A&M varsity rugby team came out on the short end of a 3-0 score against Minneapolis in the second round of the Houston In vitational Rugby Tournament, but rallied to win its other three games and secure the consolation prize. The Aggie Maroon team received a fourth place trophy with a 2-2 rec ord, while the women of Aggieland demolished all opposition and won the championship. The A&M ladies have not been beaten this year. After drawing a bye in round one, the A&M White team played Min neapolis in the second round. It was a struggle from the outset with Min neapolis notching the only score, late in the second half, on a 25-yard pen alty goal. The teams fought to a standstill in a defensive battle. As it worked out, neither team would lose again. Minneapolis went on to tie the Houston Heathens for the cham pionship, after 4 periods of overtime. The Aggies took consolation honors. In round three, A&M beat Kansas State University, 10-0. The Aggies had too much scoring power for the Kansas State champions who were frequently caught out of position. Alan Jeffrey, at fly half, had an ex cellent game for A&M, scoring six points on two penalty goals. Robert Moorman scored A&M’s only try, going over near the flag after a strike for Jeffries. the Austin Huns 21-0. The matchup between the Ags and the Houston Rugby Club in round four was a thriller. It was won in overtime by the Aggies on a 25-yard kick by Craig Belew. With Houston ahead 4-0, late in the second half, Paul Rutledge, the Aggie winger, stole a Houston pass and streaked into the end zone to tie the score. The sides were level at the final whis tle and the Ags won it on Belew’s kick in overtime. A penalty goal by Jeffrey mai 15-0 and the final score was; fully taken try by Rutledge the posts.
