This is not to mention the indi
rectly connected benefits such as
added business in the Bryan-
College Station area from families
and sightseers, who have to eat and
sleep somewhere.
The Final Week Kicks
Off
It is the Sunday night preceding
the burning. The Bonfire area has
almost completely changed since
Thursday. Tonight it is packed with
people working on the stack and
lounging around the refreshment
area, who give the usually organized
site an air of mass confusion.
The stack itself now completely
dominates the scene. The crew has
begun work on the fourth level and
the bottom level has grown wide.
The noise level, too.
The whole pace of the operation
has picked up quite a bit and the
tension in the air seems to stem
from the approaching deadline.
The Female
A girl helped build the Bonfire a
few nights ago. She actually got to
do labor before someone realized
she was female.
She was dressed in bulky clothing
and her hair was stuffed down the
back of her shirt. But she managed
to resemble a male enough to carry
a few logs to the stack undetected.
The use of females in actually
building the fire is not allowed for
slightly obscure reasons. This par
ticular female was not discovered
until a fellow worker tried to strike
up a conversation with her. The
sound of her voice probably gave
her away.
Needless to say, certain super
visors were upset and the young
lady was escorted away from the
stack, despite her willingness to
contribute to tradition.
The Alternative
An A&M professor suggested to
one of his classes a possible alterna
tive to all the back-breaking labor
and loss of study time associated
with Bonfire.
He proposed that a huge torch be
placed in the spot where the Bonfire
is erected now. The torch would
allow the release of some very
flammable, highly pressurized gas.
The gas could be ignited producing
a pillar of flame hundreds of feet
tall. The professor said the flames
cPuld be treated with chemicals to
create any color desired. Yes, even
maroon and white.
The professor also noted that he
doesn’t have much hope of seeing
his plan become a reality.

Logical Conclusions
By Friday night, there will be a
whole lot of wood stacked on the
field behind Duncan Dining Hall.
When it’s ignited, it will be very
big, very bright, and very hot. An
incredible amount of effort will go
up in smoke.
If you have worked on Bonfire,
you’ll think it’s fun and great and
worth all the sweat. If you haven’t
worked on Bonfire, you’ll only be
impressed.
German awarded
professor emeritus
Dr. John P. German, who re
tired from Texas A&M Univer
sity’s Electrical Engineering
Department last summer, has
been awarded “professor
emeritus” designation, effective
Dec. 1.
The Texas A&M University
System Board of Regents granted
the designation Tuesday upon
recommendation of the univer
sity administration.
“In recogniton of Professor
German’s faithful and most effec
tive service to the University and
to the Department of Electrical
Engineering, and our need to
call on him for advice and assis
tance from time to time, I am
pleased to recommend his ap
pointment as professor emeritus, ”
said Dr. J. M. Prescott, vice
president for academic affairs.
German came to Texas A&M
in 1958 from Purdue University .
He holds three degrees from the
University of Texas.
He and Dr. William L. Beas
ley, also of the Electrical Engi
neering Department, several
years ago developed a device to
help electric power company
personnel quickly locate power
line distrubances which result in
radio and television interference.
