i late November of 1969, a char-
bus pulled into College Sta
ll, coming to a halt at Kyle Field,
jiside the bus were the Texas
nghorns, the team that was to be
ne the nation’s number one foot-
I team that year.
[Players with names like Street,
irtlesen, Worster, Speyrer and
Her filed off of that bus and into
docker room. They were led by a
i with a name that has become
nonymous with Longhorn
otball—Royal.
The Texas Longhorns left Kyle
ield that day 49-12 victors over
eir Aggie hosts, and went on to
defeat Arkansas and Notre Dame,
earning their place at the top of the
final 1969 polls.
Now, eight years later, the Long
horns prepare once again to get on a
bus and travel to College Station.
They are presently rated number
one in the nation. Only A&M and
Notre Dame stand between the
Horns and a national championship
(they have already defeated Arkan
sas this year).
The obvious difference between
the Longhorns of 1969 and the
Longhorns of 1977 will be the
names of the players that get off that
bus Saturday: Campbell, Jones, In
graham, Shearer, Jackson, Erxleben
and others, all led by a new coach
who is making a name for himself at
Texas — Akers.
Winning is nothing new to Long
horn head coach Fred Akers. He
was a member of Darrell Royal’s
coaching staff during the 1969
championship season. Akers re
turned to Texas this year from
Wyoming where he led the Cow
boys to a Western Athletic Confer
ence co-championship last year.
One of Akers’ first moves as
Longhorn head coach was to scrap
the wishbone offense. His team now
runs out of the veer and the I forma
tions, much to the delight of Texas
fans who longed for the opportunity
to “unleash Earl.”
Earl, of course, is Texas halfback
Earl Campbell. The facts on

Campbell speak for themselves. The
Heisman Trophy candidate has
rushed for 1,522 yards this season, a
school record. He has rushed for
over 100 yards in nine games this
season. He has scored 15
touchdowns this year and 37
touchdowns in his collegiate career.
Enough said.
While defenses are keying on
Campbell, which they under
standably tend to do, the Longhorn
quarterbacks can give the ball to
Johnny “Ham” Jones who has
rushed for 439 yards and five
touchdowns this season.
The Horns have two excellent
pass receivers in Johnny “Lam
Jones, who has caught 19 passes for
463 yards and six touchdowns, and
Alfred Jackson, who has 449 yards
and two touchdowns on 16 recep
tions.
Texas’ injury-plagued quarter
back list has not seemed to deter the
Horns in their quest for the cham
pionship. Randy McEachern is
scheduled to start against the Ag
gies.
Russell Erxleben, Texas record
holding place kicker, is a doubtful
starter Saturday. He has injured a
leg muscle and was on crutches last
week at the Texas-Baylor game.
The Texas defense, led by the
likes of Brad Shearer, Tim
Campbell and Johnnie Johnson,
have allowed only 8.6 points per
game, with three shut-outs.
A winning Texas team is nothing
new to Aggie head coach Emory
Bellard, either. He was also a
member of the 1969 Longhorn
coaching staff. Saturday, his team
has the chance to spoil Texas’ un
blemished record as the Aggies and
the Longhorns renew their rivalry
that goes back to 1894.
