A&M women ‘legal’ in
(Continued from page 1)
of separation. While the first college
catalog stated that only males would
be admitted, the question of coedu
cation never arose for twenty years,
because no woman ever applied.
But somehow women appeared and
have become an important part of
the A&M tradition.

Today, there are women here at
A&M who remember those “old
days.” One woman, currently at
tending A&M, Madam M., was first
enrolled here in 1949, fifteen years
before women were officially admit
ted. She even has a ‘49 Aggie ring.
Madam M. appears to have mixed
memories of A&M. She recalls
sleepless nights and dance cards
with fondness. Her favorite story
tells how on her honeymoon, “we
had just been married that after
noon. That evening, another cadet
called and asked if I would go to a
Saturday night dance with him.”
Yet other memories seem to point
to that feeling of segregation many
A&M women have experienced.
“One professor refused to give any
of the women in our class an A ,”
Madam M. said. And even today,
she requested that her name be
withheld to spare any “hassles.”
This December 454 women have
applied for graduation, and all of
them are official.
