ars was used in the study. One-
df of the group was told to eat two

to eat no eggs during the same
period.
At the end of three months, the
two groups were reversed for
another three months. Study results
at the end of each three-month
period found the cholesterol level of
persons eating eggs and not eating
eggs made no difference in average
cholesterol level.
“It was the same story: the eggs
made no difference in serum choles
terol among these men who appar
ently have the genetic ability to
handle cholesterol,” said Dr. Mar-

population has this ability to handle
cholesterol,” Dr. Flynn said. So
why should doctors caution all the
public against eating perfectly good
food—the egg—just because of the
15-20 percent who can’t handle
cholesterol?
Dr. Flynn, UMC professor of nu
trition, said she does not recom
mend eggs to persons with high
serum cholesterol levels.
“If your family history shows lack
of heart disease, that may also be a
good indication that you’re able to
handle cholesterol,” she said.
Polls conducted recently found
four out of 10 people believe eggs
and heart disease were directly con
nected and two of the 10 said they
avoided eating eggs for that reason.
“If programmed genetically by
inheritance to do so, your body will
properly manufacture cholesterol or
degrade it,” she said, “and you can
tolerate considerable amounts of
cholesterol without harm.”
