“If we were doing it for sex, we
would’ve broken up a long time
ago,” Sid said.
“We are interested in living to
gether because we care for and re
spect each other,” Pam said.
“As far as we re concerned, we re
not living in sin,” Pam said. Sid
added, “We re actually married by
God’s rules, we just don’t have the
contract.”
“In a lot of ways, we re both kind
of old-fashioned,” explained Pam.
She said she felt it was definitely
wrong to have children before they
are legally married.
Karen and Mark have conflicting
views about marriage.
“The way I’ve been raised, it is
important to get married,” Karen
said. But Mark said it’s not an im
portant factor in making a commit
ment.
“Between me and Mark and our
relatives, we are married,” Karen
said, although she still goes by her
maiden name, and is planning a
church wedding.
Mark said that marriage is a
commitment whether or not it’s on a
piece of paper. It doesn’t really mat
ter to him when they get married,
though they will probably wait
about two years, when they
graduate.
Some roommates of cohabitating
couples have also had some adjust
ments to make.
Joyce was forced to live with her
roommate and her roommate’s boyf
riend in a one-bedroom apartment
for seven weeks. She said she put up
with it for so long because he was
only supposed to stay until he could
find his own place, and she really
did not know where to go for help.
“Maybe a lot of people like me
don’t know what to do, and just sit
back and take it,” Joyce said.
Judy had a similar experience her
freshman year when her roommate
brought her boyfriend over to spend
the night about six nights out of the
week.
It was a two-bedroom apartment,
and Judy had to sleep with her other
two roommates in their bedroom.
But it was a little hard for Judy to
take a joke when some friends found
out about her roommate and placed
a red light in their apartment.
Both Joyce and Judy were able to
escape to the dorm from their
roommates, but Mary has found that
even living in the dorm doesn’t al
ways protect you.
Her roommate hate kept her out of
her room five or six times this
semester for the whole night. On
most weekend nights, and some
times during the week, she can’t get
in until about 3 a.m.
“It doesn’t really bother me, ex
cept when I have to get in there and
get something,” Mary said. “Even if
they don’t mind you in the room, it’s
uncomfortable to walk in.”
She said she would never turn
them in, but she is getting a differ
ent roommate next semester.
