COLLEGE AVENUE BRYAN e?J [eK [eII [eIJ fFl By DONNA SCHLABACH The Pre-Law Society Work Pro gram allows students to gain practical legal experience by working with the Texas A&M University student legal advisor for a semester. Chris Kling, student legal ad visor, recently said only four stu dents were allowed to participate in the program when it was set up last spring. This semester the program has been expanded to include the officers of the Pre-Law Society. “The only criterion we have is that students be of junior or senior classification and that they have a genuine intent to go to law school,” Kling said. Students are chosen for the work program by the officers of the Pre- Law Society. Jill Hall, secretary of the organization, said society mem bers must fill out applications before they can be considered for the pro gram. She said students are chosen on the basis of why they want to be come involved in the program. “We decide who will be chosen mainly by the desire the student ex presses for wanting to be in the pro gram and by what he wants to get out of the experience,” she said. She added that grades are also considered when selecting the stu dents. Those participating in the pro gram this fall are Alice Morse, Bobby Duncan, Marcia Faykus and Michael Nelson. Pre-Law Society officers working with the legal advisor this semester are Vicki Brown, president, Roger Haseman, vice-president, Jill Hall, secretary, and Mark Hambleton, treasurer. Kling said the students sit in on interview sessions and ask questions about anything they don’t under stand. “We took them to the university library to acquaint them with the law books,” Kling said. He said this is the greatest benefit for the students because they will be expected to know how to use the law books for research when they go to law school. Hall said she thought the greatest benefit was in getting a chance to see what a lawyer really does. “Most people don’t know it, but law is a lot of research,” she said. Kling said each student has been assigned a legal question which he must find the answer. He said the answers must be backed up by re search from the law books. “These are not hypothetical ques tions, either,” he said. “They are questions we need answers to, but don’t have the time to go to the li brary and research for. ” Kling said he plans to take the students to the courthouse in Bryan and to another city to visit with the legal staff of a large law firm. Dallas location: 3071 Northwest Hwy 352-8570 United Press International BURLINGTON,N.J. — Ameri cans throw away 230 million car tires a year. Now one firm says it has a way to make use of them prof itably. Solid Conversion Systems Inc. plans to shred the tires, separate the rubber from the fibers and metals and market the “crumbs.” The “crumbs” can then be recy cled for new tire production, blended with asphalt to pave high ways, or mixed with coal for fuel, said Richard Smith, spokesman for the company. Rubber tires have proved a headache both for environmentalists and landfill operators. They don’t burn, and if buried in landfills, they never decompose. The tires eventually float to the surface, causing problems when the landfills are completed. Solid Conversion is not alone in its search for a commercial use for old tires. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. has been experimenting with tires in a “tire-fired boiler” at its Jackson, Mich., plant. The boiler consumes 36 tons of tires daily, pro ducing 25,000 pounds of steam which is used for new tire tion. Smith said General Motors, alt Fisher-Body plant in Pontin Mich., is trying a mixture ofstireo ded rubber and coal in an induste Ti size stoker-fired boiler. The Environmental Protectioi Agency, in its own research: found that mixing crumb n with asphalt makes roadways k longer and decreases maintenan costs. The tire industry, Smith said, A is looking more and more tom using crumbs as a “filler powder products. As the price for ptl rochemicals skyrockets, there is demand for substitute materials,! added. Smith also predicts a demandlt the crumbs for use in o tracks, all-weather tennis courtsai: playground areas.
