It’s hog
By DAVID BOGGAN
Battalion Staff
Behold, the day cometh.
— Malachi 4:1
Tomorrow the Arkansas Razor-
backs return to Kyle Field to face
the Texas Aggies after a two year
stand in the hills.
Aggie fans who were fortunate
enough to make the trips to Little
Rock, along with fans who huddled
around television sets for the past
two A&M-Arkansas games have
long awaited the chance to welcome
the Hogs back to College Station.
Tomorrow they will get their
chance.
three touchdowns on 92 carries.
Ben Cowins, Arkansas leading
rusher, will make his presence felt
tomorrow. The junior running back
averages 112 yards per game. He
has rushed for 901 yards and 10
touchdowns on 157 carries.
“Ben is an excellent all-around
player,” offensive backfield coach
Don Breaux says. “He has the abil
ity to make tbe tough yardage as
well as go outside. He could be the
best back ever to play at Arkansas. ”
Cowins is no stranger to Calcagni
passes, either. He has 12 receptions
for 62 yards.
What kind of Arkansas team will
the Aggies welcome to Kyle Field?
The Razorbacks, having lost only to
Texas, are still in contention for at
least a share of the Southwest Con
ference title and they are very much
in contention for a post-season bowl
invitation. So they will be playing
for keeps tomorrow.
The Razorback who is most often
on the receiving end of Calcagni
passes is sophomore wide receiver
Donny Bobo. He has caught 16
passes for 379 yards and four
touchdowns.
They have head coach Lou Holtz.
Holtz came to Arkansas last De
cember. Before taking the Arkansas
position, he was head coach of the
New York Jets.
Another Arkansas scoring threat
is all-America kicker Steve Little.
Little has made 14 of the 22 field
goals he has attempted this year.
His 67-yard field goal is an NCAA
record for the longest field goal that
he holds along with Texas’ Russell
Erxleben. Little has also completed
30 of 30 extra point attempts, and
leads Arkansas in scoring with 72
points.
He has guided collegiate teams to
bowls before. In his four years as
head coach at North Carolina State,
Holtz took the Wolfpack to a bowl
game each year. He also led William
& Mary to a bowl game, in his three
years as head coach.
Little also punts for the Hogs. He
is fifth in the nation with a 43.9 av
erage.
Arkansas quarterback Ron Cal
cagni calls Holtz a “perfectionist. ”
“His way is the right way,” Cal
cagni says. “He has made it fun for
me this year.”
If fun is derived from success then
Calcagni must be having a whale of a
time. He is the only passer in the
conference who has completed bet
ter than 50 percent of his passes. He
has completed 56 of his 103 throws
for 838 yards and seven touchdowns.
He has been intercepted six times.
Arkansas is fourth in the nation in
total defense, third nationally in
passing defense and first nationally
in scoring defense, allowing only 6.8
points per game.
The Hog defense has intercepted
13 passes and recovered 11 fumbles.
They have given up 223 yards per
game while the Aggies have aver
aged 370 yards per game (behind
Arkansas’ 408-yard average).
Calcagni is also an effective
rusher. He is Arkansas’ second-
leading rusher with 329 yards and
Some say that tomorrow never
comes. For the Aggies and the
Razorbacks tomorrow is at hand.
The winning team will increase its
chances for post-season play. The
losing team will have less of a
chance for a bowl invitation (there
will be eight bowl representatives at
tthe game). Kick off is at 1:30.
