Many representatives of this in dustry are at Texas A&M University this week for the Fifth Dredging Engineering Short Course con ducted by the Texas A&M’s Center for Dredging Studies. International participants, from as far away as Australia, are on hand for the meetings which will continue through Friday. “There has been an increased interest recently in ocean mining as land supplies of several minerals are being depleted,” said Dr. John Herbich, head of the Center. “As a result, it is increasingly necessary that we develop the ability to locate and exploit marine mineral re sources . “The most likely candidates for early exploration are shallow water deposits and as technology im proves, deep-ocean mining will be come a reality,” he said. “Pilot studies were conducted in 1970 and are supposedly taking place in the Pacific Ocean at the present time. ” Looking For Something Different?
