A word from Fayettville
QB anticipates clash
By DAVID BOGGAN
Battalion Staff
Friday, a chartered jet will leave
Fayetteville, Ark., carrying the Ar
kansas Razorback football team to
Houston. The next day the team will
board a bus and venture to College
Station where, for the first time in
three years, they will enter Kyle
Field. Here the 51st game between

the Razorbacks and the Texas Ag
gies will take place.
One of the Razorbacks on the
plane and on the bus and in Kyle
Field will be starting quarterback
Ron Calcagni.
“I’ve never been there (Kyle
Field) but I hear they have great fan
support and I hear they make a lot of
noise,” the junior quarterback said
in a telephone interview Wednes
day, but he added that his team will
not be intimidated.
“We will have fans down there to
support us,” he said.
A popular Aggie slogan at last
year’s A&M-Arkansas contest in Lit
tle Rock was “Sweet Revenge,”
stemming from the Hogs’ 31-6 upset
of the Aggies in 1975. Calcagni says
the revenge feelings will be recipro
cated this year as the Aggies’ 31-10
defeat of the Hogs last year started a
four-game Arkansas losing streak.
“The Aggies played a heck of a
game last year; their defense was
terrific,” Calcagni said, “but we re
thinking win all the way this year.
“There is a lot riding on this
game. There will be a winner and a
loser. We just hope we re the win
ner. ”
Indeed, this is an important
game. A possible conference cham
pionship , bowl bids and national
ratings will be on the line as the two
teams clash.
Calcagni said the Razorbacks’ key
to victory is evident.
“We must keep the ball and keep
our defense off the field as much as
possible,” he said. “The wishbone
offense will wear a defense down
quick. ”
Not that Arkansas has a weak de
fense. In fact, they have the nation’s
leading scoring defense, yielding
only 6.8 points per game. Calcagni
said this gives the Arkansas offense a
lift.
“The defense creates turnovers
and gets us good field position,” he
said. “They’re a tough bunch of
guys. I sure wouldn t want to play
against them.”
If the Razorbacks fail to play in
the Cotton Bowl this year, Calcagni
would like to see them go to either
the Orange Bowl or the Sugar Bowl.
His reasoning is rational.
“I want to play somewhere where
it’s warm,” he said.
Arkansas took a giant step back
wards on the road to the Cotton
Bowl when they were defeated by
the Texas Longhorns 13-9 in Oc
tober. Although the Hogs did not
defeat the Longhorns, Calcagni said
top-rated Texas is not unstoppable.
“Texas can be beat,” the Arkansas
quarterback said. “They’re a one-
man team,” refering to Longhorn
tailback Earl Campbell.
Lou Holtz will also enter Kyle
Field for the first time as Arkansas’
new head coach.
“Coach Holtz is great , Calcagni
said. “He runs a wide openofe
He uses fantastic play selection
he s made it fun for me.
Calcagni, from Youngsli
Ohio, was recruited by
Pittsburgh and North CarolinaSl
(where Holtz was head coachai
time), but chose Arkansas
of the veer offense that
kansas head coach Frank Broi
used.
When he isn’t playing
Calcagni said he enjoys
“Football is an all day
wears you down, he expl
“and there’s not much to
Fayettville, anyway.”

With something as important as your future being discussed,
it’s very urgent that you get and understand all the facts. Air
Force ROTC can be an important part of your future, and we'd
like to take this opportunity to outline some of the rtiain facts of
that matter and invite you to look further into the subject.
The U.S. Air Force needs highly qualified dedicated officers.
Both men and women, and we need people in all kinds of
educational disciplines. Air Force ROTC offers 4-year, 3-year
and 2-year scholarships with $100 monthly tax-free allowance,
and contrary to what some people think, there is no military
obligation during the first two years of the Air Force ROTC.
Upon college graduation you’ll receive a commission in the
U.S. Air Force and the opportunity to compete for a challeng
ing job with advanced educational opportunities.
Let’s get together and discuss Air Force ROTC further. Well
give you all the facts and clear up the fictions. It could be one
of the most important talks you’ve ever had with anyone.
