through next weekend.
Once a year, this central Texas
German community prepares some
42 tons of sausage, 40,000 ears of
corn and 30,000 shish kebabs for the
estimated 175,000 visitors to the
Wurstfest sausage festival. Wash
that down with a river of New
Braunfels ice water (luke-warm
beer), and you have the makings for
one of the biggest parties thrown in
the state of Texas.
It all began in 1961 when the
mayor of the sausage city opened
the first festival and beamed with
civic pride, “We re proud of our
bologna!’’ And it’s come a long way
since then.

year at 6 a.m. Nov. 5 when almost

The list of happenings for this
year include a European style bicy
cle race, a tennis tournament, a
canoe race, a regatta, bowling tour
nament, ethnic folk dances, a dog
show (dachshunds, of course) and
hours and hours of polka music
(heavy on the tuba).
Myron Floren, the Lawrence
Welk show regular who is making
his tenth appearance at the festival,
will be providing rocking polka
tunes for all those who want to kick
up their heels.
Admission to the Wursthall is
free, but other than the commu
nity’s hospitality it is the only thing.

$1.25 and “Kiss Me buttons are $1.
It seems little wonder last year the
visitors spent close to $900,000 in
nine days.
