Texas A&M will soon have a new

“All money from the auction goes
into a bicycle repair fund,” said
Donnie Albrecht, assistant director
of student activities. “People as
sociated with A&M (students, fac
ulty and employees) will be able to
use the bicycle repair facility cur
rently being set up through the craft
shop.”
The money from past bicycle auc
tions went into a campus chest used
for emergency loans. But last sum
mer a fund was established to aid
the bicyclist and bicycle oriented fu
ture uses.
Traffic Panel subcommittee is
currently looking into the future use
and problems of bicycles on cam
pus, Albrecht said.
Karen Zantow, director of the
craft shop, said all the equipment
for bicycle repair is ordered and
most of it has been received. True-

ing stands, free wheel tools, chain
tools and an air compressor are
some of the items that will be avail
able for use.
“Students will check out tools
from the craft shop,” Zantow said,
“and use them in the mechanical
room located adjacent to the Memo
rial Student Center (MSC) Cof
feehouse.” She said the repair shop
wouldn’t be open until January 16th
but some tools could possibly be
checked out prior to opening day.
The Texas A&M Wheelmen (the
A&M bicycle club) advised the craft
shop on which tools and equipment
to get. They also offered free in
structions in various phases of bicy
cle repair. The Free University also
offers a course in bicycle repair.
“The tentative date for the bicy
cle auction will be the weekend
after Thanksgiving,” said Kim
Strickland, president of the
Wheelmen.
Dave Champlin, a Wheelman
member, said he was available (free
of charge) as a consultant on bike
repairs. He said that he did not
stock parts, but could get most parts
within four days.
The Lost and Found-Special Ac
count (bicycle fund) made $1,097 in
the last auction and this money is
being used to equip the repair shop.
Elliot Lowe, president of the Alpha
Phi Omega said 25 bicycles and one
tricycle were sold at the summer
auction.
“Some of the bikes were expen
sive models such as Gitanes,” Lowe
said. None of the bikes sold were
registered so they couldn’t be traced
back to the owners, he said.
“Approximately 75 percent of all
bicycles on campus are unregis
tered,” said O.L. Luther, Univer
sity chief of police, “and records
show that bicycles are being stolen
at the rate of one per day.”
Some students may not get a
ticket for not having their bikes reg
istered, he said, but they may lose
their transportation.
