A porous type of road surface cur
rently being tested by the Texas
Transportation Institute (TTI) at
Texas A&M University has proven
effective in reducing many of the
hazardous highway conditions
caused by rain.
Professor Bob M. Callaway of the
TTI said tbe porous surface reduces
vehicle hydroplaning and skidding
for prolonged periods of time under
heavy traffic, thus reducing acci
dents. Hydroplaning occurs when
the car actually rides on the water.
“A film of water tends to stand on
the surface of conventional pave
ments, Gallaway said. “This film of
water causes partial hydroplaning,
which in turn is a major cause of ac
cidents.
The type of pavement TTI is test
ing is an open-graded, high-void
mixture that can he placed on exist
ing pavement surfaces in layers of
about three-fourths inch.
“Because of the high void con
tent, water that falls onto the surface
drains directly down into the porous
surface, leaving the road relatively
dry,” Gallaway said.
Friction increases on this type of
surface to two or three times that of
normal road surfaces, he said. There
is also reduced splash and spray
from tires, which is especially im-
pa
portant at night because reflections
from the water droplets can make it
hard for drivers to see, he added.
Other advantages of the porous
surface are: longer life of pavement
striping, a smoother and a more
quiet riding surface, reasonable
costs, pleasing appearance and an
absence of loose stones, Gallaway
said.
This type of asphalt surfacing has
been in use since the earh 1950 s,
Gallaway said. Much operational
success has been reported, hut
there have been some problems of
pavement distress in certain areas.
There could also be an increase in
maintenance costs in some areas, he
said.
A test section of. the porous sur
face was paved two years ago on
Highway 21, west of Bryan,
sections have also beet
plemented in Dallas, An
Beaumont and Lufkin
Td say a large percenla Wtii'g a

utilize this concept in vein

Taking the Law Boards in December or February?
Thorough preparation requires Amity’s unique
personal approach. Why face the exam alone when
you can have Amity’s team of test speciafists on your
side? Consider the resources of the nation’s most
student oriented preparation for the LSAT:
CONVENIENT WEEKEND SCHEDULING
CLOSE TO EACH LSAT TEST DATE
Intensive courses arranged to avoid conflict with academic
schedules. Systematic, strategy minded instruction with
integrated practice testing. Separate classes in each subtest area
focus attention on the special requirements of each test section.
NATION S MOST SPECIALIZED
TEAM-TEACHING APPROACH
The most expert test instruction available, because each
instructor is a specialist in the LSAT area he teaches. Each
student works with five different instructors, specializing in
-writing,-log.ic, business judgment, math, and legal reasoning.
** '12-STUDENT AVERAGE CLASS SIZE
More individual attention and involvement than in any other
course. The nation’s best student-faculty ratio. Small seminar
classes have a guaranteed maximum of 18 students (and an
average class size of 12). Instructors give constant careful
attention to individual questions, problems, and analysis
of errors.
• CONTINUALLY-UPDATED CURRICULUM
A teaching curriculum wholly revised for the 1977-78
testing year, reflecting the substantial changes in LSAT
content. Challenging practice material, concentrating on the
upper half of the LSAT’s range of question difficulty, best
prepares students for the rigors of the exam.
