Bernal, chairman of Mexican- American Democrats (MAD). Bernal spoke to a small group ol students Thursday night on the role of Mexican-Americans in this state-wide organization. His appear ance was sponsored by the Com mittee for the Awareness of Mexi can American Cultures (CAMAC). MAD, a caucus group of the Democratic party, attempts to in fluence the state party from within, Bernal said. “The ability to provide goods and services to the people involved is what politics is,” said the national committeeman for the Texas Demo cratic party. If people are outside the realm of these services, they are not getting the benefits of politics, he said. “If we keep training middle class people, they will keep serving the middle class society,” Bernal said. The 1968 Democratic convention was dominated by the middle class, and Humphrey was nominated be cause of that. Chicanos became more involved in politics in 1972, he said, when they sent 14 delegates to the Demo cratic National Convention. “They were free-wheeling chicanos who spoke their mind,” Bernal said. In 1976, with the nomination of Jimmy Carter, 22 chicano Democrats went to New York. “All of a sudden, we were flex ing our muscles,” he said. Bernal said he was disappointed that a chicano did not get a cabinet position in the Carter administra- — t — ^X^* ^Xp ^X^ ^Xf ^Xf ^’§' w The Battalion Classified SPECIAL NOTICE WANT AD RATES One day 10c per word Minimum charge — $1,00 Classified Display $1.85 per column inch each insertion ALL classified ads must be pre-paid. There is a societal need for trained chicanos and other minorities, Bernal said. As doctors, lawyers, politicians and teachers, he said they would have greater sen sitivity in dealing with minorities who need these services. When minorities try to get help on the university level, society sometimes interprets it as reverse discrimination, Bernal said. The Supreme Court will soon rule on the Bakke case, which deals with a 37-year-old white male who is claiming he was reversely discrimi nated against because a California medical school would not accept him as a student. Bernal said he thinks the Su preme Court will choose not to rule on the reverse discrimination issue, but will rule that there is now a greater societal need to keep provid ing space specifically for minorities.
