DENVER — Paul Wright wants
to arm the world s non-smokers with
six-ounce spray cans that can be
whipped out to gun down anyone
impudent enough to light up a “vile,
odious and disgusting” cigarette or
cigar in the presence of others.
The 42-year-old former chain-
smoker says it’s the perfect thing to
use on a crowded subway or
elevator. He guarantees the lemon-
scented mist will make the smoker
sit up and take notice : — if not come
out swinging.
Wright already has tested the
product in the Denver area and
proclaimed it a success. Now he’s
ready to sell it to the world — at
$3.95 a can —- and he will use the
profits to help launch his anti
smoking centers across the nation.
“One fellow in Golden (west of
Denver) cured his wife of smoking
in bed by using the spray,” Wright
said. “He hid a can under his pillow,
and when she lit up, he sprayed the
hell out of her. She’s not smoking in
bed any more, and that’s a habit she
had for six years. And they’re still
happily married,” he said.
Wright is the president of the Na
tional Association on Smoking and
Health, a profit-making company
that was created to help people quit
smoking.
A state senator who won passage
of Colorado’s first anti-smoking bill
keeps a can of the spray on his desk.
A can was also sent to Gov. Richard
Lamm, a non-smoker who dislikes
the habit but keeps ashtrays avail
able in his office.
Wright, who quit smoking 18
years ago when a doctor told him to
stop or die, said the product is
mainly water and so safe you can
drink it. It won’t stain clothing and
is guaranteed to provide non-
smokers with “the ultimate of satis
faction. ”
Directions, which are written on
the can, tell the user:
— when cigar, cigarette or pipe
smoke is detected, aim atomizer at
source and spray for one second.
— if smoker becomes irate, spray
again.
—- persistent smokers may re
quire a triple fiutterblast (three
short sprays) and a few carefully
selected words.
“We expect to do a lot of business
in New York City with this prod
uct,” Wright said, who has been
called the “Ralph Nader of the
smokers’ world.” “Right now there
are some fist fights breaking out at
times because of smoking on subway
trains.
“Someone will light up a cigar or
cigarette. Someone else tells him
it’s a no-smoking area. The smoker
will tell him to shut his mouth and
take a swing at him.
“Non-smokers really think of
smoking as a vile, odious and dis
gusting habit,” Wright said. “Non-
smokers will get their point across
with this. When you threaten them
(smokers) in any shape, manner or
form, they get upset.”
Wright, who looks upon smoking
as a drug addiction, isn’t worried if
someone gets upset after being hit
by a shot of spray.
“If they do, so what?’ he asked.
“You get your point across. We’re
trying to save lives. If we can get 10
people to quit smoking and save
their lives, we have done our job
well.
“We want to wake America up to
the fact there are half a million
people dying annually because they
smoke cigarettes and another IV2
million suffer physically-relatedi
abilities.
“I think we’ll do more vyi|[
