Wyatt addressed the 65th class of peace officers to graduate from the basic certification course of the Law Enforcement and Security Training Division, Texas Engineering Exten sion Service. The Extension Service is part of the Texas A&M University System. Twenty-one rookie policemen and sheriffs deputies received cer tificates. They were presented by Chief Ira E. Scott, division head, and Bill Cooksey, course instructor. Choya K. Walling of the Bryan Police Department scored highest among the trainees. Kenneth Mil ler, also chosen the most outstand ing student, and Class President Ray Thaler had highest scores on the firing range. Miller is from the Madison County Sheriffs Office; Thaler, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept., from Ledbetter. The group s training, required by law within six months of becoming a police officer, equipped the new peace officers with a broad base of knowledge on which to build their law enforcement careers. Wyatt informed the group that in dealing with law-abiding citizens, they are facing a “bunch of moral marshmallows. When asked to serve on juries. They can’t have it on their conscience, they say.” They pass the buck,” Wyatt charged. “They want George to do it. Well, George ain’t gonna do it for you.” I’m sick of police being called pigs, especially by a punk who never worked, never votes and never takes a bath, he added. I m sick of court decisions. I m sick of an imaginary push that has brought the careers of two Houston police offi cers into disrepute. I m sick that police are bleeding, brained and blinded because bystanders won’t think. Wyatt asked tor fairness for law enforcement personnel.
