Pros to give class tips
Texas A&M students in an engi
neering design graphics course will
get profesional guidance Oct. 20-21
from the department’s Visiting En
gineers Program (VEP).
Nine engineers from Houston and
Waco firms will consult with student
teams in EDG 106 on semester-long
product development projects. The
engineers will give general guid
ance, evaluate preliminary ideas and
present parallel examples from their
company operations.
Department Head Dr. James
Earle said student teams will com
plete projects on a garbage compac
tor, gate opener, overhead projector
adapter, pole vault pit or other
team-proposed problems by Dec.
1-2. Visiting engineers return then
to hear team reports and evaluate the
students’ projects.
“It’s a highly valuable experience
for the student,’’ Earle said. The
VEP provides a broad view of the
engineer’s approach to problem solv
ing and design methods, and how
engineers communicate, in oral,
graphic, and written form.
“In a sense, visiting engineers
serve as a rotating industrial advisory
committee. This relationship is valu
able for instructional improvement
and content development. The visit
ing engineers are encouraged to
suggest changes in course materials
that would improve our offerings,’’
Earle said.
