■ ayr » I /“XL-1 v_/i >i WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1977 sports Rain is an A&M-Baylor tradition By DAVID BOGGAN Rain before or doing the Texas A&M-Baylor football game is an un official Aggie tradition. Despite this, a sellout crowd of 48,300 is expected at Baylor Stadium Saturday for the 74th meeting of the two teams. While the Aggies are expected to he at full strength for the game, Baylor joins Houston, Texas Tech and Texas in the injured quarterback column with the loss of sophomore Sammy Bickham who suffered a knee injury in last week’s 9-6 victory over SMU. Sophomore quarterback Wood will start in place of Bickham. Wood started for Baylor against Nebraska and Houston. “Greg has done a fine job all sea son,” says Baylor coach Grant Teaff. “I have confidence in him and so does our team.” Tailback Gary Blair, Baylor’s lead ing rusher last year, is expected to return to the lineup after missing two games with a sprained instep. Baylor’s defense, with the return of noseguard Jay Allison and defen sive end Lester Ward after injuries, has the respect of Aggie coach Emory Bellard. CASUAL FASHIONS for GUYS & GALS TOP DRAWEE Culpepper Plaza “There is no weakness in their de fense,” Bellard says. “They have the finest secondary in the country.” The Baylor secondary was the de ciding factor in the SMU game, Teaff says. Led by Howard Fields, Tony Green and Ron Burns, they held SMU to only 21 yards passing. They also held Texas Tech to 28 yards pass ing with Rodney Allison healthy. Baylor leads the conference in pass ing defense. They are fifth in the con- Franklin I4K Chains By The Inch $.69/inch ferehce in total defense, right behind Texas A&M. In their previous 73 meetings, the Aggies have won 43 games, the Bears have won 23 games and there have been seven ties. The Aggies have won the past four games, including last year’s 24-0 shutout. It was that game in which Aggie kicker Tony Franklin kicked his fa mous back-to-back field goals of 64 and 65 yards. “I don’t sleep very good at night thinking about being on the same field with Tony Franklin, ” Teaff says. “He just takes the life out of your defense. “My daddy always told me that if you could stop the other team at mid- field you’d get the football,” he adds, “but with guys like Franklin that just isn’t the case anymore.” Baylor kicker Robert Bledsoe, a freshman, is also capable of kicking fieldgoals from considerable dis tances. His longest field goal is 47 yards. He has completed five of ten field goal attempts and he is six for six in extra point attempts. Luke Prestridge, Baylor’s punter, is having a good season. He is averag ing 44 yards per punt on 31 kicks with opponents averaging just 4.6 yards per return. Teaff also has respect for the Aggie team. “They have tremendous talent and play with great intensity,” Teaff says. “That compounded by the fact they are coming off the Michigan loss. They will be out to redeem them selves at our expense.” The Aggies are 1-0 in conference play and the Bears are 1-2. It should be a good game. So grab your umbrella, head for Waco and enjoy it. MON. - SAT. wiIson /uptnamba Eddie Dominguez '66 Joe Arciniega ’74 United Press International DALLAS — The Tony Dorsett- Preston Pearson situation will be un altered this week, Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry said Tuesday. Pearson will start against the Wash ington Redskins. Dorsett will play — a lot. And although the local fandom is frothing to see Dorsett gain 250 yards and score five times in a game, the faithful will have a hard time ar guing with Landry’s logic. In four games this year the two have combined at the halfback spot for 493 yards rushing and 214 yards receiving. Dorsett’s 77-yard touchdown run against St. Louis last week — the longest from scrimmage in the NFL this year — and his 141-yard per formance increased speculation that the 1976 Heisman Trophy winner would replace Pearson in the starting lineup this week. “We will play them about the same way,” Landry said. “Preston will start. Tony is making a lot of progress. He is making progress in every game. I just hope my backs — Tony, Preston and (fullback) Robert Newhouse — continue to play like they have been.” In earlier games Dorsett had often exited when a critical situation arose. He did not play, for instance, in the final moments or the overtime period in the season opener at Min nesota. But Dorsett played down the stretch of Dallas’ 30-24 win over the Cardinals Sunday. “Tony is still in the learning phase,’ Landry said. “He still doesn’t make all the assignments. I just don’t want to speculate when he might start or how I might play them in the future. Because if I do say something I will probably turn around and do the opposite later on and everyone will come back and remind me of what I said before. Landry indicated that the more a running back learns the less chance he has to be injured, and that appar ently has played a part in his decision not to keep Dorsett in a game all day. “The less you know about the blocking patterns in front of you, the more apt you are to get hurt. He is still learning the patterns. But he might have played more if we had not gotten as good a performance as we have from Preston Pearson.” A victory over Washington would give the Cowboys a two-game lead in the NFC east and the Redskins could come into the game in their worst physical shape of the year. Redskins coach George visited by telephone with loti media Tuesday and he chronicledj long list of injuries — including w# being suffered by linebacker Cli Hanburger, running back M Thomas, cornerback Pat Fischen defensive tackle Dave Butz. “I hope everybody feels sorry I George,” said Landry, after hearia Allen’s comments. “We aren’t! best shape, either.” The Cowboys will probably missing center John Fitzgeralt] (knee) for the Redskins gameandn ceiver Drew Pearson is nursing ij badly bruised wrist, but the resto the club will probably be healthy Intramurals Lea.
