Page 6 THE BATTALION MONDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1977 McDonald'S) DRIVE-THRU WINDOW MCDONALD 9 INTRAMURAL HIGHLIGHTS McDonald's BREAKFAST EVERY MORNING t Warm, windy golf start Sunday offered both heat and wind as barriers to be overcome by 132 golfers. The turnout this year was not as high as last year possibly due to conflict with the Texas Tech game (sorry about that). The scores were not as low as they might have been mainly due to the wind. Dorms and Corps units compete for points in this competition. All groups were divided into A, B, and C classes. The low point individual for class A in the 18-hole qualifying round was James Denniston with a 71. Ed Attention latent sports writers Do you want to be a star over night and make the sports page? If you do, just write your own glory. Turn in your own articles on your self or team to the Intramural Of fice. Quinlan was the leader for class “B” with a 75. The class “C” leader was Brett Kruse, he fired a 91. There were only two women in the com petition, Mary Whiteley for the Independent division and Julia Ar thur for the women’s Corps (sure would like to see more women on the greens). Single elimination playoff competition will begin soon with 9-hole rounds to determine University champions. Stars and other heavenly bodies Only the Intramural Depart ment could come up with such a name. This is the Co-Rec contribu tion that is currently competing in flag football. Extramurals Women’s field hockey Women’s field hockey is a com paratively new game in the South, but it is very popular in the Eastern States. Currently the game is played in only a few scattered high schools in Texas. The A&M team has a few experienced players but most of the present 13 women ros ter are just learning to play. The games played this year will be mostly against high school teams but they are good. Houston’s Kin- kaid High School, the currbht state' champs, walked on the Aggies (10-0) in their first game. The Ags are still learning and having a lot of fun. The sport is probably destined to boom especially after it is played in the 1980 Olympics. Practices are held daily (except for Friday) in the middle of the Polo field, across from the golf course. The next game is October 1 in Houston against St. John’s High School. The University of Texas also has a new team and the Ags are looking for ward to meeting them. The extramural sports that are commencing activities at this time are: Women’s Field Hockey, Men’s Soccer, and Orienteering. All of the extramural sports offered at A&M compete in intercollegiate competition, unlike the intramural activities. Men’s soccer The fast growing sport of soccer is already underway. The men’s team has played two of their 12 sea son games and sport a 1-1 record, losing to Trinity and beating T.U. (yeah!). They will play Rice here Saturday and the University of Houston there on Sunday. These soccer teams will be affiliated with the newly organized Southwest Conference League after this semester. “Out-sized and out-numbered, but not out ranked.” Intramural Ref. Competition will be based on ac curacy as well as distance. The field goal competition will entail field goal kicks at increasing distances. The punt, pass, and kick contest is based on the furthest distance but the amount of accuracy will effect the final recorded distance. Orienteering What in the world is orienteer ing? This is a sport from Europe that involves cross country running utilizing a map and compass. The object is to find specific points traveling across various types of terrain in the shortest amount of time. There will be seven more meets held this semester all over Texas with at least ten colleges and universities competing. The last meet was held at Fort Beauregard in Alabama, where Marshall McKinney placed 10th overall out of about 150 contestants. A&M will host a meet October 8 on the land around the old heavy equipment school.
