ORLANDO, Fla. — Former
Rangers manager Frank Luc
ies! says he filed suit against
limy Randle, the infielder who
jigged him March 28, to try and
event any such incident from
ippening again in baseball.
Lucchesi, 50, said he filed the suit
[Wednesday not for the money but
o preserve the integrity of
“ball.”
JtobyJ^I
Feii
He said he took the action “so
something like this will never hap
pen again in baseball or any other
sport. If you let Handle or any other
player get away with this kind of vio
lence, then anyone could punch out
his manager or coach, get traded
and then come out smelling like a
rose. ”
The personal injury suit, filed by
Orlando attorney James E.
Shepherd, seeks more than $2,500
in damages, the minimum needed
to have the case heard in circuit
court.
Lucchesi, who was fired by the
Rangers in June, said he wanted a
summons to be served on Randle
personally “so he could do a little
thinking. I’ve had to suffer a lot with
this thing and now I think it’s time
he started thinking about it too.”

Texas AikM coach Emory Bollard said Tuesday
he was concerned about the physical condition of
fullback George Woodard, who pulled a groin mus
cle against Virginia Tech last Saturday. “He was at
practice Monday, but he couldn’t run, said Bol
lard. He will play against Texas Tech Saturday if he
can run, but if he can t, then Eddie Hardin will he
our fullback. Woodard s injury is not a serious one,
but it is serious this week. . . . Texas Tech head
coach Steve Sloan said Tuesday his No. fi ranked
Red Raiders were not even close to being ready for
No. 7 ranked Texas A&M this week. “Every team
having to play A6cM should automatically Ik*
awarded an open date* the week before, ” Sloan said,
contending it would take at least two weeks to he*
ready for A6cM. Sloan also said walk-on kicking
specialist Bill Adams had been awarded a schol
arship following his record-tying seven extra points
in lech s win over New Mexico last week. . . Texas
A&M sold its 6,288 tickets for the Texas Tech game
back in June. Also some 600 ticket orders had to he
refunded. . . I he Aggie Band will he* on hand
Saturday night in Lubbock. The band missed the
Virginia lech game and will not go to Michigan hut
will make nine of A&M's 1 1 games. . . R.C. (Beau)
Bell, A&M s all-America centerfielder in 1931, died
in College Station on Sept. 13 at age 70. He played
in the majors eight years with the St. Louis Browns,
won two SWC titles as Aggie baseball coach (1951-
58) and was inducted into A&M s Athletic* Hall of
Fame in 1971. . . Sophomore Curtis Dickey netted
141 yards against Virginia Tech to raise his season s
rushing total to 277 and his career mark to 1,003.
He needs 83 more to pass John Kimbrough for the*
No JO spot on the A&M all-time* list. . Junior
fullback George Woodard had 82 yards against
Virginia Tech and a career total of 1,989. He is third
on the all-time list. Bubba Bean leads with 2,846
rr I s second at 2,415. . . Junior Mark
Thurmond will he the starting pitcher next Sunday
when the A&M baseball team plays a team of Hous
ton Astro farmhands in the Astrodome. The game
will be the second of a doubleheader as the Astros
play the L.A. Dodgers at 2 p.m. . . .Aggie swim
mer Boh Leland, who just returned from a trip to
Russia with the U.S. team, is ranked 3rd in the
nation and 17th in the world in the 200-meter
breaststroke. . . A&M has had a change in its up
coming basketball schedule. The Ags will host SW
Louisiana on Dec. 1 rather than SW Texas. . .
.A&M coach Emory Bellard: “Virginia Tech has
some good players and they played with a lot of
enthusiasm. Jimmy Sharpe (Va. Tech coach) does a
good job. 1 felt we played well but missed a lot of
opportunities. There is no question we know who
we play next (Texas Tech) hut we weren’t looking
ahead. . . . FB George Woodard: “They stacked
up the middle real well, f was really impressed with
their defense. ”. . . LB Kevin Monk: “Virginia Tech
was better than last year. Their offensive line really
did a good job. We got together and regrouped. A
good defense always stiffens when it has to. ’. . .
Va. Tech Coach Jimmy Sharpe: “A&M has taken
the triple option a step further, giving it a new di
mension. They have size, speed, a lot of talent and
defensively, they gamble a lot. We had some great
defensive plays but we had some costly turnovers
and penalties. The score isn’t a true indication of the
hitting in the game. ”. . . A dozen former Aggies
are sticking with pro teams. Ed Simonini has won a
starting LB slot with Baltimore. OG Dennis Swilley
is with Minnesota; DT Edgar Fields with Atlanta;
IIB Bubba Bean with Atlanta; LB Garth TenNapel
with Detroit; OG Glenn Bujnoch with Cincinnati;
Saf. Dave Elmendorf and DB Pat Thomas, both
with L.A. Rams; LB Brad Dusek with Washington;
DE Tank Marshall with NY Jets; Saf. Tim Gray
with Kansas City and DT Jimmy Dean with Hous
ton. LB Robert Jackson was injured and will miss
all year after being drafted by Cleveland.
The suit charges Randle slugged
Lucchesi in the face with his fist on
March 28, prior to an exhibition
game between the Rangers and the
Minnesota Twins, and that Randle
kept hitting Lucchesi after the man
ager had lost consciousness.
Lucchesi suffered a fractured
cheekbone that required surgery, a
cracked rib and cuts and bruises.
The suit says Lucchesi has in
curred medical and hospital ex
penses and also “suffered great
humilation, embarrassment, loss of
personal and professional reputa
tion, damage to his professional
career and mental and physical pain
and suffering and loss of income. ”
After the incident, Randle was
suspended from baseball for a
month, fined $10,000 and eventu
ally waived out of the American
League. He later signed a five-year
contract with the Mets.
