Page 8 THE BATTALION THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1977 T: Trained to assist By MARGIE SANTAMAR1A Heart attacks, sprained ankles and heat exhaustion are just a few things the Texas A6c M Emergency Care Team (ECT) is qualified to treat. The team, composed of 35 stu dents, administers emergency care during campus events and activites. Last year, the ECT helped the American Heart Association screen 2,400 people for hypertension in two days, said Steve Borron, ECT squad leader. They also covered rugby games, fencing tournaments, the A&M Rodeo Association’s rodeo, the Elephant Bowl, the Bon fire (with other first aiders) and football games. Ideally, we will have four team members present at every home football game, said Jim Persons, senior physical education major and president of the club. During the last home football game many people suffered from heat exhaus tion and the ECT was there to help, Persons said. “This year we seem to have a good percentage of people that are pre-med, pre-nursing or pre-vet majors,” Persons said. Team members have various qualifications. Some are Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), or Emergency Care Attendants (EGAs), while others are certified standard first aiders, Borron said. Dr. Claude B. Goswick, director of the Beutel Health Center serves as ECT club adviser. “On May 10, 1977, two team members who were working with Mid-Texas ambulance service were responsible for saving my life,” Goswick said. He had suffered a heart attack and the students as sisted in cardiopulmonary resuscita tion. WE RE HUMAN! WE KNOW ALL ABOUT ERRING . . . BOTH AGAINST OUR FELLOW MAN AND AGAINST GOD. The club receives book store funds to help buy equipment, but donations are always welcome, he added. “Anytime they should need more equipment we (the Health Center) are glad to help, Goswick said. United Press International MIAMI — Telly Savalas, televi sion’s “Kojak,” may be testifying for the defense in the murder trial of a teen-ager who plans to plead that “TV intoxication” was responsible for the robbery-killing of an elderly neighbor. Defense lawyer Ellis Rubin said Savalas “is familiar with the effects of TV violence” and he wants the actor to “tell the jury why he goes around the country making state ments that such shows are harmful to children.” Savalas says he deplores TV vio lence, and notes that Kojak relies more on reason than firearms to catch crooks.
