Miller at a Tuesday luncheon hosted by the Texas A&M chapter of the Texas Association of College Teachers. Dr. Miller rejoined the organiza tion and pointed out that he had been a member when he had ac tively served as a professor. “We must find ways to communi cate more effectively and show how we contribute to the well-being of this state. Dr. Miller told the at tending faculty members and guests, who included state Sen. \\ illiam T. (Bill) Moore, state Rep. Bill Presnal and Texas A&M Uni versity System Chancellor Jack K. Williams. President Miller said that the role of a professor is not w ell understood by the public or by many members ol the Legislature. He noted the aspect of “contact hours,” the time faculty members are actually in class. He said that he had been directly involved in a sur vey in which faculty — both teach ing and research — showed a minimum of 50 hours of effective work per week but still slightly under the prescribed time in the classroom, “Senator Moore and Representa tive Presnal need good information from us if they are to defend us in Austin and also safeguard the public interest. Dr. Miller said. President Miller reminded the audience that “all of us are public servants. iec t Reed ■cess i»dy K re a 11 at tl sitors The ge A' iideti t ivilioi room b The tti|insist: firs rrkin) Returning to the subjediifiif slt ° r nal communications, Dr, III “At this university, we’ve good stew ards, he said.
