Two medical students receive scholarships Medical students Timothy Field of Plainview and Jay Franklin of Tyler were named Friday to receive new $1,500 seholarships made avail able to Texas A&M University’s first class of medical students. Field, a 1977 magna cum laude graduate of Texas A&M, was selected as initial reeipient of the Harrison Scholarship established by local physician Dr. Richard Harri son III, a 1947 Texas AikM graduate, to honor his father. Dr. R. H. Harrison. Harrison presented the award. Franklin was initial recipient of the Dr. Sam Houston Sanders Scholarship established by Sanders, a 1922 Texas A&M graduate and now a physician in Memphis. Both scholarships were endowed with $30,000 gifts to the University. At the ceremonies, it was an nounced that Tarleton State Univer sity graduate Garry Anderson of Stephenville would attend medical classes here on the $2,000 Frank A. and Gladys F. Chamberlin Schol arship awarded a student from Erath County. Anderson graduated this year from TSU with a perfect 4.0 grade point ratio. In addition, 10 of the 32-inember charter class were recognized for top academic achievement and each received a $300 merit award. , They included Anderson, Gary Latson of Amarillo, Robert Luedecke of Corpus Christi, Scott Orth of Houston, Mark Sicilio of College Station, John Ulrey and Joel Vogt of Pasadena, Patricia Watson of Houston, Leslie Webb of Odessa and Thomas Wheeler of Seguin. Dean of Medicine James Knight also recognized other scholarship holders among the 32 students; in cluding President s Endowed Scholars Susan Rudd of Houston and Paul Schmidt of Fort Worth. As President’s Endowed Schol ars, Rudd and Schmidt were chosen while still in high school to receive the $ 1,250-per-year awards. Texas A&M s group of medical students may be the- youngest in the nation. Entering an accelerated program, they average two years younger (age 20) than the national norm for beginning medical stu dents. The students also rank higher academically with an average grade point ratio of 3.83 on a 4.0 system. Women comprise 21 per cent of the first Texas A&M medical class.
