THE BATTALION Page 3
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1977
BY KARIN KNAPP
The new system for student lami
n'service at Texas A&M Univer-
ily, which was designed to provide
jdents with minimum service at
inimum cost, is running more
oothly after weeks of problems.
Ron Vandiver, owner of Fabric-
ire Service of Bryan, said the
indry service cannot and is not
leant to satisfy everyone’s needs.
Iter three weeks of student com-
aints about long waiting lines for
ndry pick-up, lost laundry, and
jhcost, Vandiver said he believes
operation is beginning to run
loothly.
There will always be lines at the
bstations to pick up laundry,” he
“When Fabric Care Service is
te and students have to come
ck, they’re more aware of the
eness. Vandiver said he has
hired extra employees to cover the
substations more efficiently.
Scott Patton, a member of the
student laundry committee, said
four to six students a day complain
to him about the laundry service.
Patton, a junior Corps member, said
he tells them to bear with Fabric
Care Service until the problems can
be settled.
“The main complaint is that stu
dents can’t rely on getting their
laundry back on the right day,” Pat
ton said. “When guys bring in their
laundry on Wednesday, they expect
it back on Friday for the weekend.
So far, they can’t depend on the
service to get their laundry back on
time.”
Vandiver contends that students
will always need some type of laun
dry service, and that Aggies on the
laundry plan do get their money’s
worth. Jennings Cleaner, at 3000
Caroline in Houston, for instance,
charges $12.65 to handle the same
load that Fabric Care Service picks
up, cleans, and delivers for $3.15.
“We aren’t trying to force this
down students’ throats, Vandiver
said. “But students who want their
laundry done will get it done well on
this plan.”
Texas A&M has a five-year con
tract with Fabric Care Service. Joe
Nixon, Residence Hall Association
president, said the contract stipu
lates that no washers and driers can
be installed on campus during that
time unless Fabric Care Service in
stalls them.
Neither Patton nor Vandiver
would estimate how many students
have obtained refunds on their
laundry service. Patton said Corps
members are currently doing their
laundry elsewhere.
Some washaterias in Bryan-
College Station have noticed an in
flux in business this semester. High
lander Center Washateria in Red
mond Terrace in College Station,
has increased its business, but
owner B. F. Liles said he does not
know if the laundry service problem
has anything to do with it.

Questionnaire is
'enforcing law’
(Continued from Page 1)
Brown, who has tried once before to register, said he was
never informed about tins right to appeal. He has also filed an
affidavit with the Secretary of State s office saying he applied for
a voter registration certificate but never heard from the Tax
Assessor’s office. State election code law requires that any appli
cant in rejected-voter status for any reason must be notified in
writing by the registrar (Symm), and is entitled to a hearing with
the registrar.
The citizens of Waller County were reluctant to talk with
reporters, but discussion in a local barbershop centered around
the controversy. Most people in the county seat at Hempstead
expressed feelings of bitter resentment at the intrusion of White
into “their affairs. Hempstead residents felt that the issue
would be resolved quickly by Symm.
“We do not disqualify students,” said Chrystal Carr, Chief
Deputy Tax Assessor-Collector, in response to questions about
filing procedures.
“We think that students should be interested in politics but
we want them to be interested at home where they are actively
involved,” Carr said. “Only transients or those here for a tempo
rary purpose are refused voter certificates.
A spokesman for the Secretary of State’s office said they are
well aware of the contradictory policies in Waller County.
“Symm is in direct violation of the Secretary’s Emergency
Order,” John Pettit, Assistant Secretary of State said Wednes
day. “Our people have been down there arid know the situation
first-hand.
Mark White sent three attorneys to Prairie View September 8
and 12 to take a statement from students involved and to survey
the situation.
Under state law, the Secretary of State has asked the Attorney
General to seek an injunction preventing Symm from using his
questionnaire. Attorney General Hill filed suit in the 155th Dis
trict Court Wednesday , to force LeRoy Symm to stop using his
questionnaire about residency as a condition for valid voter reg
istration.
