Kansas is inexperienced

Saturday afternoon the Kansas
Jayhawks will embark upon one of
the toughest schedules in college
football.
After playing the Texas Aggies,
Kansas travels to UCLA, Oklahoma,
Oklahoma State, and Nebraska. The
Jayhawks also play host to Colorado,
“I don’t think there is any ques
tion that it is one of the toughest in
the country,” coach Bud Moore said
about his upcoming season. “It is
not just a matter of who we are play
ing either. The distance we have to
travel can also take its toll.
eight offensive and ten defensive
lettermen.
Senior halfback Bill Campfield
will be the Aggie defense’s major
concern. Campfield, is thought by
some sports writers to be one of the
best blocking halfbacks in the Big
Eight.
Campfield will be taking hand-
offs from junior quarterback Mark
Vicendese. Vicendese, who was
red-shirted until the last three
games of the season, is the team’s
fifth best ground gainer.
“There is no doubt that Mark has
a chance to become a good quarter
back,” Moore said. “He, like all of
our other quarterbacks, has consid
erable improvements to make.
“I think we do have some promise
at quarterback, but we are very
young and inexperienced. For that
very reason we can’t expect too
much too soon.

Mike Williams (No. 10) will be a key figure this Saturday
when the Aggies play host to Kansas. The senior corner-
back will be facing a wishbone attack, yet one which will
pass on any given down. Kick-off is at 4 p.m.

The tough schedule is not Kansas’
only problem this year. The 1977
Jayhawks will be one of the most in
experienced teams that Kansas has
ever fielded. The defensive secon
dary is a special worry of Moore’s.
“There is no doubt about it,”
Moore, one time Aggie offensive
coordinator said. “We are a young
team. We lost several players from a
year ago who had three and four
years playing experience.
“We will be replacing them with
people who have had little, and in
most cases, no experience.
Kansas should not be taken too
lightly. The Jayhawks of a year ago
were the fourth best rushing team
in the nation.

Vince Dooley was unhappy after;
watching the Bulldogs praetice-
Tuesday, four days away from their-
season opener against Oregon.
“There were a lot of mental errors
out there today and a lot of missed
assignments,” said Dooley who put
the team through a 1% hour session.
The remainder of the week will
be spent going over individual as
signments and play recognition in
preparation for Saturday’s game, he
said.
