Fans growing restless
Bears need winning seasoi
United Press International
WACO — Baylor coach Grant
Teaff gave Bears fans an awful lot
real quick after he took over the
club in 1972.
Three years after Grant’s arrival
in Waco the Bears won the South
west Conference championship for
the first time in 40 years.
But during the two years since
Baylor has produced a 10-9-3 record
and has not been back to a bowl. So
have the area residents lost interest
as the one-time darling of underdog
fans.
“Lord, no, said Teaff. “Quite the
opposite. We have sold more season
tickets this year than we ever have
even though we are picked no bet
ter than sixth in the league.
T’ve never seen the excitement
like we have. And it’s the solid kind
of support. ”
Baylor has sold more than 10,000
season tickets this season, up almost
1,000 from last year, and the foot
ball-mad fens have already contrib
uted more than $7,000 to the schol
arship flind this year.
“We have a deal every year called
“meet the Bears,’’ Teaff said. “We
have folks come out to a dinner and
visit with the players. They pay $7
to come.
“This year we had 1,000 people
come out to that even though most
of the players there had never
played in a varsity game before.”
So enthusiasm has now dwindled
in Waco. Now all the Bears have to
do is to produce another bowl team
and things will really get out of
hand.
And to have a winning team this
season the Bears need to have
someone produce at the quarter
back spot. Teaff has chosen to go
with sophomore Sammy Bickham,
but, with only a week left before the
Bears’ opening game against Texas
Tech, Bickham was on the injured
list.
“Sammy has a separated shoul
der,” said Teaff, describing an in
jury which usually keeps a player
out for weeks and weeks. “Fortu
nately, it is only slightly separated
and it is on his right shoulder,
Bickham is left handed.
“The doctors think he will be able
to work out during the week before
the Tech game. But the loss of work
has hurt.
“Sammy was making a whole lot
of progress during two-a-day work
outs. He missed spring training be
cause of baseball, but he worked
very hard in competing with Greg
Wood, another sophomore. But, fi
nally we had to say ‘ok, this is the
one we are going to start with.’ And
we have done it.”
