It’s going to be awful hot,” said an in his first weekly news con- jence of the season. “Condition- 1, depth and being use to this ie of weather will be a definite tor in the game. ” Sloan said since the Raiders gan their series against the Bears the rivalry has always made nnltfllj f game important. [‘There is a big rivalry between lixas Tech and Baylor coaches and iyers an the game will be played th a little bit more emotion,” lan said. “Some people are going play harder and a lot of extra ef- t will be exerted, ” he said. is Wi !rs r % tfBiee t 'ers^j upairol a t TCf "g'teek Sloan also noted playing the first game away from home requires some extra preparations. “The Baylor-Texas Tech series has been a home series giving ad vantages to the home team,” he said. “It would stabalize the team a great deal if they could play their first game at home. Players react a little better to familiar surroundings if you can open at home.” Playing at Baylor, Tech has won only twice in 14 tries while the Bears have beaten the Raiders eight times out of 20 attempts at Lub bock. Bears prepare United Press International WACO — Head coach Grant Teaff said yesterday he has not de cided who will be the Baylor Bears starting quarterback during the sea son opener against Texas Tech Saturday. Sophomore Sammy Bickham was named to the starting position last week, but was sidelined with a shoulder injury and has not prac ticed for 10 days. Bickham s backup, Greg Wood, suffered a severe ankle injury and will be out for several weeks. “I honestly do not know what Sammy’s situation will be,” said Teaff in his weekly news confer ence, “but at this time we will start Scott Smith. I’m hopeful that Sammy can come along and play in the ball game, and we re going to try a shoulder petd that we re hoping will give Sammy some protection.” Teaff said he regretted playing Bickham before he recovered fully, but since the game was a Southwest Conference contest, he had little choice. “If this were anything other than a Southwest Conference football game,” he said, “I would not even consider suiting Sammy up, much less consider playing him. Teaff said trainer Skip Cox de signed a shoulder pad that may allow Bickham to play, but unless the Plano, Tex., native can work out Monday or Tuesday it will be dif ficult for him to play. Tech, which travels to Waco for the first time in three years, edged the Bears 24-21 in the season’s finale last year. Come by and visit us!
