Sports Can Kansas jayhawk’? By PAUL McGRATH Battalion Asst. Sports Editor The Jayhawk, now the namesake of the University of Kansas, is a mythological creature, distin guished by large feet and an over sized bill. The term “jayhawk” is most commonly associated with a band of Civil War guerillas fighting in the Midwest, but its origins seems to come a decade or so before the con flict. The earliest use of the word has been traced to an 1848 wagon train attempting to cross the deso late plains to reach the California gold fields. Faced with shortages in equipment and provisions, the min ers were asked how they expected to survive. “We are going to jayhawk our way,” was the reported reply. Thus, the band became known as the Jayhawkers. Eventually, most of them reached California after suffer ing several terrible ordeals. Main Downtown Bryan 779-3270 Kansas head football coach Bud Moore will be trying to “jayhawk” his team through the 1977 season as the third-year coach faces his biggest rebuilding task yet. Inexperience is the most common virtue found in Lawrence these days as Kansas is without 21 letterman and 10 starters from last year’s squad. Seven of those who departed went in the National Football League draft. The Jayhawks lost stellar quarter back Nolan Cromwell and leading ballcarrier Laverne Smith, losses which may cripple what was the na tion’s fourth best rushing team last year. Also gone are linebacker Terry Beeson, the Jayhawk s top tackier last fall with 130, and top notch de fensive lineman Mike Butler, a four-year letterman. The defensive secondary was perhaps the the hardest hit as only one starter returns, Tom Fitch, an academic all-America. For replace ments, the Jayhawks moved three offensive players, quarterback Mark Lissak, halfback Jimmy Little and split end Delvin Miller to the sec ondary and each is figured to play an integral part. Little is listed as the No. 1 cornerback this fall. “We have some good athletes,” Moore says, “but we simply have little or no experience. Rebuilding is a problem Moore has had to solve before. Since taking over at Kansas in December 1974, Moore has produced winning teams in successive years, a feat which had not been done there in 10 previous years. The Jayhawks also went to the Sun Bowl in 1975, Moore’s first season. The ways and wiles of Alabama Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant have nibbed off on Moore through the years. He played under Bryant at Bama before joining the staff of Charley Bradshaw at Kentucky in 1962. Both Bradshaw and Moore’s subsequent boss, Gene Stallings at Texas A&M, were pupils of Bryant. In 1971, Moore went to North Carolina where he was ap assistant under Vince Dooley and renewed a friendship with Tar Heel athletic di rector Homer Rice. Rice, now the coach at Rice University, was the of fensive coordinator at Kentucky during Moore’s tenure there. Moore will be returning to Aggie- land this Saturday in the season opener for both teams. This will be the second meeting of the two, the first being a 28-10 Kansas victory in 1974. Three of the Jayhawks first four games come on the road against po tential Top Ten teams — Texas A&M, UCLA and Oklahoma. Thus, the schedule is definitely working against them. “I don’t think there is any ques tion that it’s (the schedule) one of the toughest in the country, ” Moore said. “It’s not just a matter of who we are playing either. The distance we have to travel can also take its toll. ” Kansas teams have usually been marked by the presence of at least one or two so-called superstars, |ep : sjieve such as running backs C*; fc i(Ttrine K 1 and John Riggins ° r quait, Isas like John Hadl, Bobby Dow Cromwell. Smith was elevated to the first team when starter Sammy Bickham suffered a shoulder seperation and his backup Greg Wood sprained an ankle a week ago. Both players have been unable to work out since. “If we had opened with Tech this afternoon Scott would have been our quarterback and the way it looks now he will be there when we do,” said head coach Grant Teaff after his squad’s three hour workout.
