Six (weekend) ways
to keep from studying
In our never-ending search for
ways to keep from studying, we
stumbled upon a Battalion
classic: Writing a Useful Article.
. .this time, about that very sub
ject. The result, for the next few
weeks, will be a column of things
to do in or around Texas A&M.
Our only promise is that these
activities are thouroughly dis
tracting, and that they in no way
earn you academic credit toward
a degree.
* Our friends at Cepheid Vari
able have plastered the campus
walls with an ad that shows a
strange looking woman standing
next to a cadet slicing a piece of
watermelon. The message is to
seethe film, “Bell, Book & Can
dle” tonight at 8 and 10 p.m. at
701 of Rudder Tower. Price is a
measly 50 cents plus a glimpse of
the ID card.
★ Aggie Cinema is presenting
John “Duke Wayne and “The
Shootist.” tomorrow night and
Saturday nights at Rudder Thea
ter. The cost is twice as much as
the Cepheid film, but remember
you’re getting 99 minutes of John
Wayne. Aggie Cinema sums it
up this way: “An aging gunfigh-
ter learns that he is dying of
cancer and decides to go out with
his boots on and to take com
pany. ” Bang bang.
★ Speaking of boots, our resi
dent c.t. says that it’s not too late
to join the Corps of Cadets. He
promises a semester of “hump
ing it,’ shining brass, polishing
shoes, doing pushups and taking
orders. Interested? Report to the
Guard Room of Kiest Hall any
time.
★ Informed sources tell us that
Snook Bakery produces the best
kolaches in the Brazos Valley,
and more. To get there, take
Highway 60 to Snook. Turn left
at the (only) intersection and fol
low that road until you find the
bakery.
★ Picnic-by-the-lake fans: we’ll
bet you’ve never heard of scenic
Bryan Utilities Lake Park. Don’t
try to swim there yet. Instead,
bring a fishing pole, a picnic
lunch and $2 admission fee. The
park is six miles north of College
Station on Highway 21.
★ Finally, the Basement Cof
fee house at the MSC will feature
Bob French, the singing profes
sor, Saturday at 11 p.m. Ray
Stanton precedes him at 8 p.m.,
and admission is 50 cents. The
coffeehouse is open from 8 to 12
tomorrow and Saturday.

where to send people for help. It is
sponsored by the Mental Health As

County,
It was offered to hair stylists last
spring. Coordinator Ann Fikes said
cabdrivers, cafeteria workers and
teachers may soon be added to the
list.
“All these groups are similar be

with the public and are all listening
to persons with problems,” Ms.
Fikes said.

HOUSTON — Officials of Baylor
College of Medicine and the Uni
versity of Texas medical school said
Tuesday they will not join other in
stitutions in refusing government
subsidies for American transferees
from foreign schools.
The U.S. Department of Health,
Education and Welfare reported at
least nine top medical schools, in
cluding Cornell, Harvard, Yale and
Johns Hopkins, will refuse the sub
sidies if they must accept quotas.
Officials at Baylor and UT, how
ever, said they do not expect impos
ition of specific quotas — one ap
proach to implementing the Profes
sional Education Assistance Act of
1976.
The law requires that transfer
students meeting certain require
ments and winning HEW approval
must be accepted by American
medical schools. It also provides a
$1,400 per student annual subsidy.
There are 6,000 American medi
cal students attending schools in
other countries, most hoping for
transfers if they can meet the stan
dards of one of the 120 U.S. schools
booked up when they applied.
