Texas A&M University’s petroleum en gineering department is experi menting with the process termed coal gasification. Dr. James W. Jennings, who heads the project, said 17 wells have already been drilled in the Yegua coal formation on Texas A&M prop erty about three miles southwest of the main campus. “This gas could be produced today at a cost equivalent to that of 3709 E. 29th St. Town & Country Center Bryanl AGGIE BLOOD DRIVE TODAY & TOMORROW MSC natural gas,” Jennings said. “Our main objective is not to de velop a commercial process, but rather to look at some problems commercial operators would have and answer some of these ques tions,” he explained. “And we re providing hands-on experience for students in this technology.” How does the process work? “The wells have been drilled into a lignite bed 380 feet deep,” Jen nings said. “The basic system in volves two wells; air is injected into one of these. “Next, burning charcoal is drop ped in to ignite the lignite bed. Gas escapes into fractures in the burning lignite. “Then air is in jected into the other well resulting in reverse combustion. “Sixty per cent of the gas driven dioxide ar, a gas (I,, off consists of carbon nitrogen resulting ii burns cleanly.” The researchers will light them derground fires when the Ten Water Quality Board issues a pernj for the project. Board approval expected by mid-August or Se]a tember. "All experiments done the past and the lab work (most the University of Texas) indicated; effect on ground water is minimal, Jennings said. “Gas produced by this proces can readily lie used in a natural power plant, ” he said. “This give us an opportunity to use existing power plants.” Jennings said the Russians havi been using gas produced by tfe process on a commercial basis sin# the 1950s.
