LOS ALAMOS, N.M. — One
thousand weary firefighters from
three states gained ground Sunday
in their four-day-old fight against
one of the worst forest fires in New
Mexico recently.
By sundown yesterday, the fire
had consumed more than 10,000
acres of timber and had burned to
within three miles of Los Alamos -—
a scientific headquarters perched on
a pinetree-covered mesa more than
7,000 feet above sea level.

Officials said firefighters suc
ceeded in laying a fire line around
the northern edge of the blaze and
the city — home of the atomic bomb
and much of the country’s nuclear
research — was not in danger.
“We are making headway,” said
deputy fire boss Ed Richardson. “If
we can keep it up, and have enough
forces to bear, we can get the upper
hand on it.”
The fire, swept along by 15-25
mile per hour winds, raced through
dry brush and timber. It was con
centrated in a canyon south of the
city and spilled onto surrounding
mesas where the Energy Research
and Development Administration
(ERDA) maintains numerous con
crete-reinforced bunkers housing
various types of non-nuclear ex
plosives.
An ERDA spokesman Ken Bra-
ziel said there was no danger the
flames would detonate the ex
plosives buried within the igloo-
type structures.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Someone
is making a fat profit on the sale of
high-priced “pep” pills to truckers,
but apparently the only crime in
volved is peddling without a
license, police said Sunday.
Officers said the pills and cap
sules contain no stimulant except
caffeine, and the peddlers are
careful not to call them ampheta
mines.
Detective Bob Rowell, who
posed as a trucker and bought some
of the caffeine capsules Saturday,
said one of the sellers claimed a
$4,000 per month profit. He said
they bought the pills for $5 per
hundred and sold them for $45 per
hundred.
Rowell said he arrested two men
on charges of peddling without a
license and they posted bonds of
$35, the amount of the fine for that
offense.
“We are getting complaints from
the truck stops about this group.
