Dr. Gene Walker, a pediatric
psychologist at the University of
Oklahoma Health Sciences Center,
said these otherwise “normal” stu
dents have phobias of the disci
plines, as other people irrationally
fear heights or the sight of tit
or dogs.
Walker said many of the real
and writing phobias result (i ;
conditioned reactions.
“Perhaps in the first grade, j reaten<

how to read. He or she mayl#
had a hearing problem or si

After a time, Walker said, { jaches,
original problem may be resold
but the barrier to learning wti j coir
was removed has been replacedt iousand
another one, the phobia.
“Since the child couldn’t read
write well, he or she was probd
pretty much a failure in school,’’!
psychologist said. “The student:
sociates reading and writing
failure, and most kids are scaredl
death to fail. In time, the fear
grow and the child really nei
help.”
Walker says help almost
comes by systematically desensi
ing the fear. The approach, he
has been shown to work repeated 1 P m
in research laboratories and inpu
tice since it was developed! G rove ‘
psychiatrist Joseph Wolpe,
The approach combines rein
tion techniques with initially s®
doses of stimulus, in this ease, pu
ticing reading.
“But one never allows the stiui
lus, like reading, to produce
response of fear,” he says. “H
therapist may begin by presents
something very simple, a couplet
short sentences, with the remind
that there is plenty of time.”
If the student becomes anxic
he should stop the work and do
laxation exercises until he is ta 6:30 p.m
fortable. Walker said
After several sessions will
therapist, the emotional reacts
should either have disappearedi
lessened, he said.
“Then he or she will be ready
learn how to read or write,
math if that is the problem, ”Wal
said. “Some children begin readi
almost immediately; others
more time.”
Walker says systematic desensi
zation also works well, wi
modifications, on people of any
and on other types of phobia.
The time requied to removi
phobia varies, but if there are
complications, five to 10 sessio
should be sufficient, Walker said
