Langdon noted major Texas A&M University research contributions toward solving the energy crisis dur ing a speech at the West Texas Chamber of Commerce Convention in Midland. “For years Texas has pioneered more new and successful drilling, exploration, production, and secon-. dary and tertiary recovery tech niques than any other state or nation in the world,” Langdon said. “Beginning about 25 years ago, the Texas Petroleum Research Committee (which operates at A&M) wrote the pioneering papers showing the effect of increase in oil recovery and the effects of fractures on water flooding in secondary re covery programs,’’ he said. “Apply ing this technology, Texas oil operators have produced in excess of $ 10 billion worth of additional oil and gas through fractured wells.’’ “Many of you are aware that liquefied natural gas is being im ported into the U.S. to provide sup plemental energy needed in the Northeast,” he said. “But, probably few of you know that 18 years ago the TPRC wrote what was perhaps the first paper proposing the liquefac tion of natural gas and its transport to energy deprived areas.” “Recently, research has led to new TPRC-authored papers proposing the injection of air at pressures to achieve displacement of oil,” Langdon added. “Keep in mind that By JOP here was a spi osney Thorn Texas has approximately 50 iasement Cofft barrels of unrecoverable oil UkM University presently may become 'recovAwn to those 1 with employment of this leA missed a goc ogy.” ■hornton, app Dr. Paul Crawford, assistaMd, once agar rector of TPRC, said that rettjnusual musieu only two per cent would yi(| additional one billion barrel)j for the Texas economy. “In addition to the valueij research, more than 600 netl dents (450 of them fromTexaslj have been trained in technoloj increasing oil and gas recoverl working on TPRC projl Langdon said. “We believetll resents the best interest oftbl road Commission and thebesiif est of all Texans.” Greeks to hold Derby Wei By MARK PENNY Battalion Staff Cow chip throwing, tug-of-war, “butt branding” and musical ice buckets are a few of the activities nine Texas A&M University sororities will be participating in this week. The events are part of Derby Week, sponsored by the Sigma Chi fraternity. Approximately 500 to 600 women will be participating in the second-annual event, said Lloyd Davis, a Sigma Chi member. Besides the sororities, one inde pendent team. Southern Comfort, is participating. The group consists of approximately 25 women from on and off-campus. The Derby Chase is to be held this afternoon at 4 at Tanglewood Park in Bryan. Points will be earned by grabbing derbies off the heads of Sigma Chi members as they run within a re- sticted area. The first four places in all events receive points which will determine the winner of Derby Week. The Sigma Chi banquet is to be held tonight at the Ramada Inn. The Derby Day Beauty Queen will be judged at the banquet. Davis said this contest is a sepa rate event that is not included with other Derby Week activities. No points will be given. Friday afternoon’s main event will be the “Butt Branding.” The Sigma Chi men will paint their Greek let ters across the seat of the women’s shorts. The sorority with the largest at- tendence percentage-wise will win that event. Throughout the week the teams have been presenting skits for the members of Sigma Chi. A panel of judges rates them on performance, creativity, originality, group inter est, spirit and theme. This year’s theme is the Old South.
