Gay lifestyle a political attitude

wore these to a Valentine’s party
last year.”
Though some gays dress up in
feminine clothes there are others
that dress up in very “butch” drag
— black leather, motorcycle
chains, etc.
Keith said there are certain
things that gays can wear that au
tomatically tip them off, but on the
A&M campus, dress is more subtle.
How do homosexual men find
each other at A&M? “The radar,”
said Frank. Everyone agreed.
What is the “Radar”?
“Dress.”
“The way they move.”
“Grooming.”
“Length of eye contact.”
“Body movement.”
‘ “Straight males have fleeting eye
contact with other males,” Mike M.
said. “Gay males have much longer
eye contact when they look at
men.”
Bars are the easist way for
homosexuals to meet others like
them.
Bill said that how one likes Texas
A&M depends on the individuual.”
It can be alright, it can be good, or
it can be the pits,” he said.
“I’ve adapted,” Frank said, “I
Consider Bryan-College Station my
home. I’ve been here six years. My
friends are here. My work is here.
My school is here. I go out of town
about twice a month.” Frank is a
graduate student.
“I like it here,” Mike M. said.
“The only drawback is that there’s
no place to socialize in town other
than private homes.”

“M iss May and Hemingway

Alfred A. Knopf published her bio

She is expected to speak on her
years with Hemingway and the de

“I’m here simply because I love
the school. The social life is lacking.
I’m one of the ones that flies off to
Houston every weekend,’’ said
Ron, who had remained quiet up to
then.
“What happened here tonight
with people just dropping in is pretty
much what the social life is like here.
You go over to friends’ houses, invite
people over for dinner, go to Sam
bo’s or Denny’s for a late night
snack,” Mike M. said.
“And believe it or not we never
end up in bed,” Mike G. said. He
said that most of the gays’ lovers
lived in other towns.
a lot more understanding. If some
thing bothers me I tell them. Also I
hated my roommates in the past
who’d tell me all about their female
conquests,” he said.
Bill has a heterosexual room
mate. “He never says anything to
me and I never say anything to him
about it, but he knows my story.
Last semester he was going to live
with someone else. He decided not
to leave. Evidently he liked my
home cooking instead of frozen piz
zas,” Bill said.
Correction
“You don’t have church socials
where you meet other gays. You
don’t have things like Tupperware
parties,” Mike G. said.
Some gay men meet each other
in “tearooms,” a gay term for bath
rooms where quick, anonymous sex
occurs. Frank said that there are
several “tearooms” on the A&M
campus, but the homosexuals he
knows disapprove and do not fre
quent them.
“The social thing here is what we
decide to make it. As far as I’m con
cerned, the gay community isn’t all
it should be here,” Mike G. said. “I
feel we could be much happier if
we could get together a little more.
That’s the type of thing Alternative
as a community organization is try
ing to do.”
“I was horrified when I came to
this school. I thought, ‘My God, I’ll
be the only gay person there,”’
Keith said. “But I came here be
cause this school offered a lot.
A&M is a big name. It means a lot
on a diploma. That’s why I came
here ... and also because it’s close
to the Houston bars.”
“We could be in a worse place. I
like it here because I have friends,”
Keith added. He said that his lover
lives in Houston, so he goes out of
town a lot.

Runoffs April 14
“This has been well-documented
in study after study,” Frank said.
“Most sexual contacts are from
without the gay circles. There’s
norms against having sex with
friends.”
Fred said that he liked living
with the two homosexuals. “They’re
