The imen broke four Texas A&M |ol records. Shirley Hill, a freshman from San Diego, Calif., set a record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.6 seconds, two-tenths faster than her previous time. Stacy Pletz, a freshman from Huntington Beach, Calif., set a record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1.09.7. Two relay teams, the 400-yard medley relay, where all four strokes are performed, and the 800-yard freestyle also set school records. Jeannie Buckles, Suzie Lynde, Pletz and Hill made up the medley team, while Jennie Hicks, Debbie Starr, Hill and Lynde made the freestyle team. Other events that the women competed in were the 400-yard freestyle relay with Hill, Buckles, Hicks and Starr, the 200-yard freestyle with Hill and the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard indi vidual medley with Lynde compet ing. Munday started his career in the early ’60s and officiated his first SWC game after only two years of experience in the high school ranks. “I now work 18 to 20 games a year and really to be honest the crowd doesn’t affect me any more,” he said. Munday also said the require ments of the SWC officials is far less than the average fan would imagine. “We really have no set require ments with the SWC other than to be approved by the coaches them selves,” Munday said. Contrary to many referees, Munday has had very few incidents occur to him during basketball games. “I have had very few problems in my years of officiating,” he said. “So far I haven’t had a fight nor have I had to call a technical on a coach in recent years,” he said. “Hopefully my luck will stay the same.” Another official that resides in College Station is RedCassion, who is presently in his 21st year as an official with the National Football League (NFL). Cassion talked about the pressures of officiating professional football players. “When you get to the higher Rent Your Prom or Wedding TUXEDOS Aggie Cleaners 111 College Main levels of officiating you begin to feel the pressure of the situation, but interestingly enough I try to isolate myself on the football field and I have found that you can make it a very lonely place no matter how rowdy the crowd is,” he said. Cassion also said that he has the highest regard for the athletes and coaches of professional football. These people at this level be come professional when they walk on a football field and they both know when you make a mistake,” he said. “And as it has been said so many times before, those who don’t admit mistakes just aren’t human.’ Does your Final Review uniform fit right? None of the entries from Texas A&M finished in winning places which includes the top 16 positions in the finals and the title of All- American for the swimmers. In order for a swimmer to make it to the national meet, a qualifying time set by the AAU must be at least equaled by the swimmer. The times from the sixteenth place in each of last years events are used for qualifying times the following year. All of the women competing this year from Texas A&M have been to the AAU nationals before, except Starr. These women went with teams in which they belonged be fore coming to A&M. This is the first year that women have gone to nationals representing Texas A&M. “We improved a lot of our times, but unless your times are well below qualifying times you really can’t expect to win any events. The men’s team has had members qual ify for AAU nationals before, but we feel that for women to go repre senting A&M is a real accomplish ment for us,” Starr said yesterday. Now that the 1977 swimming season is over, the swimmers are already beginning to work for next year. For the women, that means playing water polo against male teams in the intramural program at Texas A&M. The women will be defending a 4-0 record in their next three games. The men are attending workouts on their own at a slower pace than during the regular season. Both teams will begin the regular water polo season next fall.
