W.B. Lancaster, president of the board, said the estimated value of the district would be more than $200 million in 1977. The estimated value of the school district for 1976 was $165,843,697. This increase of more than $34 million is partially the result of additional building and construction in the district, said Ole Grauke, as sistant superintendent of finance. “Right now we are on sort of a quarter system. In a month or so, after re-evaluation, everybody’s property will be re-evaluated at the same time,” Lancaster said. Tax Assessor-Collector Jewell Ellis said, “Re-evaluation is neces sary to equalize the market value in the school district.” With market value, the buyer and seller are both aware of potential value, usage and faults of the prop erty to be bought or sold. With re-evaluation of the school district some people will pay more, but actually the tax rate will be less, Ellis said. He said the reason some people will pay more is because land in the school district has not been re evaluated since 1965. The tax rate is based on budget needs for the school district and is changed accordingly, Ellis added. The tax rate for 1976 was $1.81 per $100 evaluation based on 80 per cent of market value. Ellis said that under the law, everyone is required to place, or render, all taxable property on the tax rolls, except what is expressly exempt such as places of worship or state-owned property. Privately owned cars, land and money are taxable, Ellis said. “There is no penalty for not plac ing money on the tax rolls because there is no real way of finding out how much money a person has, he Sun Theatres 333 University 846-9808 Super-Grody Movies Double-Feature Every Week Special Midnight Shows Friday & Saturday S3 per person No one under 18 Escorted Ladies Free $3 With This Ad BOOK STORE & 25c PEEP SHOWS THIS SUMMER COME HOME TO RICE Full credit Rice University Summer Program Houston, Texas 77001 call (713)-527-4019 W.
