I consider myself to be a symbol of Aggie spirit on and away from the A&M campus. I will need to de velop, organize, and “control” Ag- gieland spirit, while at the same time being a liaison between Aggie traditions and the current diver sified student body. Should yell leaders serve as spokesmen for student athletes? Heck no, student athletes should be spokesmen for student athletes. How would you unify the increas ingly diverse student body at Texas A&M? First of all unity starts with be lieving in a common cause. Our common cause is the friendliness and respect we have for Texas A&M University. Our yell leaders can be that symbol only if they are sup ported by the student body as a whole. I don’t want to try to be a yell leader for the non-regs or any other particular group, but I would like the opportunity to be an “Ag gie” yell leader. To begin with, I’m an Aggie. It is my desire to be a part of this univer sity and enjoy it to the fullest. I’ve Mark Lewis been active in student activities and have also been in the Singing Cadets since my first semester. I know what it is to be a real Aggie, and that I would make a good yell leader. What do you consider to be your role in student affairs? As a yell leader, I will not only lead the student body at all ball games and yell practices (including baseball games). It is my job to try to keep our university unified, as it has been in past years. I think this unity is a problem since A&M is so large now with so many interests on campus. Should yell leaders serve as spokesmen for student athletes? I think it would be my responsi bility to express any views the athletes have to the student body. How would you unify the increas ingly diverse student body at Texas A&M? I will do anything I can to bring the many diversified groups to gether in the A&M student body. This will involve encouraging indi viduals to accept each other as fel low Aggies, and trying to break down and eliminate the barriers keeping them apart. Also, coming together at ball games and pulling together for our fighting Aggie team is a major part of our unity. SETTLEMEYER Miller Settlemeyer, 19, Sopho more, Industrial Distribution major from San Antonio, Texas. What are your qualifications for this office? Physically, I’ve got the voice to get myself heard. My biggest qual ification, however, is wanting to Miller Settlemeyer serve for all Aggies — past, present and future. I am not running as a non-reg, but as an Aggie wanting to do a job for all who can truthfully say they are Aggies. What do you consider to be your role in student affairs? I see the job of yell leader as a political one only during elections. From then on, a yell leader is looked upon as an example for all Aggies, therefore his outward ap pearance and actions should be such that they do none other than accen tuate the high charcter standards of A&M. Should yell leaders serve as spokesmen for student athletes? Since yell leaders have a direct outlet to the students from the athletes, yes I believe they should serve as spokesmen for student athletes. How would you unify the increas ingly diverse student body at Texas A&M? The best way is to be willing to work together with whoever else is elected. If the student leaders can’t work together for the purpose they set out to do, one can’t expect the students to follow as one body. STRAUB Ed Straub, 19, Sophomore, Building Constmction major from Bayville, New York. What are your qualifications for this office? Ed Straub The biggest qualification that a yell leader needs and I believe that I have is spirit. I actually believe that I have the fire, enthusiasm, and the spirit to keep the A&M crowd just as enthusiastic as I would be on the field and the court. My love for A&M has grown to the point that I know I can maintain this spirit. Dedication to my school, as well as myself, is my goal as a yell leader. Whenever I’m involved in an ac tivity I completely devote myself to doing the best job I know how. What do you consider to be your role in student affairs? Many people believe that a yell leader just goes onto the field and leads yells and that’s it. That ideol ogy is totally wrong. A yell leader is tbe Ambassador of Texas A&M. Everyone sees the yell leader and everyone gets their impression of an Aggie from the yell leader. There fore, he must at all times have the class, spirit, and enthusiasm of the ideal Aggie. The yell leader is the 12th Man. If you ask anyone on campus who the leaders are and they can tell you. But ask that same person who all their profs are and they probably can’t tell you. You know that yell leaders are the am bassadors of A&M. Should yell leaders serve as spokesmen for student athletes? Being in contact and becoming friends of the athletes, a yell leader should defend the athletes if word is spoken against them. But I don’t think a yell leader should speak for an individual athlete’s opinion. As I said before yell leaders are the am bassadors for A&M and they should defend all Aggies. How would you unify the increas ingly diverse student body at Texas A&M? A&M is built on spirit and tradi tion. Tradition has always been at A&M. Change is a definite part of society. The framers of the Con stitution allowed for change with amendments. Even though A&M is big on tradition, change is neces sary. I noticed at the basketball and even football games students were leaving eight minutes early. Tradi tion is great, but a need for change is necessary.
