Do you think the present over
crowdedness will be alleviated with
last year’s bond election, or is more
construction needed?
I think the schools are trying to
maintain 25 (students) to 1 (teacher)
right now. If we keep growing,
there has definitely got to be more
facilities. There is no way you can
get around it. In a few years from
now there may have to be another
Ijschool out south of town. That de
pends on the growth rate.
Do you support continued de
velopment of vocational programs?
Very definitely. There are so
many students now that don’t feel
college is important and they don’t
intend to go to college. I think we
have ignored, to some degree, that
group of students. I would like to
see the vocational building that is
under planning right now, be com
pleted and completely equipped.
What are your thoughts on fu
ture programs for students with
learning disabilities and acceler
ated students?
With the learning disabilities,
they are developing those programs
now. They will be starting in kin
dergarten and pre-kindergarten
testing students so that they can
catch learning disabilities before
they get into first grade. Then there
will be a continued strengthening of
that program because of the
federal-state mandates.
The accelerated students have
existing programs that need support
and strengthening. I’m currently
aware of the programs they have
and I teach related problem solving
courses at TAMU. I’ve taught prob-
Vem solving in a gra&oaie coTopoier
course, architecture, and
environmental design. It is helping
to develop each person to think for
himself and find out where his own
abilities lie. This is directly related
to the “Talents Unlimited” pro
grams at A&M Consolidated.
What do you plan to do about
improving the maintenance of
physical facilities?
That is a problem. If you go over
to Middle School, there is a mud
slide area. With my background in
architecture I propose to support
the solving of the erosion and
maintenance problem. There is lit
tle site planning and that is why a lot

I would like, if we could get the
Landscape Architecture Depart
ment to work with us, to work out a
master plan. Possibly we can get
some parent involvement where we
could have days of the year desig
nated to plant trees and shrubs.
We could probably get some free
trees from the state as long as we are
using them on state property. There
are some pretty barren and desolate
campuses and there is no need for
it.
What do you think could be done
to improve the safety and quality of
present playground facilities?
I have been working for the last
four years on playgrounds. My
environmental design students have
provided playgrounds to College
Hills and South Knoll. They asked
us to assist them because the play
ground facilities are almost nonexis
tent. They were pretty much
freebie-type playgrounds in that we
used railroad ties, telephone poles
and a whole series of donated
things.
My master’s is social and be
havioral factors in architecture. We
go into the perception of the child
and how he uses the playground.
We also consult with human-factors
engineers and professors in physical
education at TAMU.
How do you feel about current
taxation methods and how do you
feel it could be improved?
The ad valorem tax is an unfair
tax. It is not a very equitable way to
tax anybody. The California Su
preme Court just threw out the ad
valorem tax as a way to raise school
funds in the state of California.
I am supporting the five per cent
tax on petroleum that is in the hop
per right now in the Senate. That
would be taxing at the refinery.
Since 70 per cent of all those prod
ucts are used out of state, that
would mean the other states would
be paying for our education system.
The tax question will be handled
at the state level. At the local level
we must have fiscal responsibility in
the budget and experienced han

BB&L is the tree

And for cars. And personal loans, too.
BB&L
BB&L was founded in 1919 with a single pur
pose. For more than half a century, BB&L has
been the tree to come to for shelter. For new
homes. For installment loans. For home im
provements. For retirement income.
Funds for these family services comefrom fam
ily savings. BB&L savers earn the highest div
idends permitted by law and receive the pro
tection of an agency of the federal government.
Last year BB&L paid out $5.4 million in div
idends to savers—more than any institution in
this region. Talk to BB&L about your savings
situation. Talk to BB&L about your loan re
quirements. Find out how BB&L can help you
get bigger (and better), too.
NOTE: All certificates have a minimum deposit of $1,000.
Federal regulations require that a substantial interest pen
