Stephen Riter, director of the EAST program at A&M. “Our publication concentrates on energy conserva tion devices and techniques particu larly suited to the Texas climate. For instance, the largest energy consumer in many Texas homes is the air conditioning unit, not the heating unit as in northern areas.” The information for the publica tion was compiled by Walter Patter son, assistant professor of building construction at A&M. For much of the past year, he has been working with builders, architects and con sumers to encourage energy effi ciency in homes. Patterson says that over a long term mortgage, a homeowner’s in creased monthly payments for the added costs of building in energy- efficient equipment will be more than recovered through smaller monthly utility bills.
