don’t see it as a real fight be-
Ifeen the pipeline and the rail-
lads,” argued Rep. John Wilson,
[•La Grange. “A coal slurry pipe-
will be a necessity in the future.
Iiiergy demands for the future are
going to he considerably different in
the future than they are today, and I
believe a coal slurry pipeline is an
alternative that ought to have a
chance.
Proponents say the mixture of
crushed coal and water is the most
efficient method of transporting
huge quantities of coal to Texas in
the future.
But critics contended pipeline
backers have no assurances they can
obtain the necessary 3.6 billion gal
lons of water a year needed to carry
the coal from Wyoming, Colorado
and Montana to Texas in the slurry
pipeline.
Rep. W. S. Heatly, D-Paducah,
who said the pipeline is scheduled
to cross some of the best Texas farm
land, opposed giving the company
power to condemn land.
“Condemnation and gestapo are
one and the same,” Heatly said. “I
am trying to stop the gestapo
power.”
The slurry pipeline bill already
has been approved by the Senate,
but must be returned to the Senate
for consideration of House changes.
One House amendment that could
encounter problems in the Senate
was a provision by Rep. Jerry
Donaldson, D-Gatesville, permit
ting judges in condemnation cases
to award attorney fees in addition to
the compensation given landowners
for their property.
Rep. Joe Hanna, D-Brecken-
ridge, said the slurry pipeline bill is
essential to provide for future energy
sources, and does not give favorable
treatment to pipelines.
“This bill does not guarantee
