Allmans split
for third time
Cher Bono Allman and her
husband, Greg Allman, have
split for the third time. An attor
ney for the 30-year-old singer
filed a petition yesterday for a
legal separation from Allman
after 21 months of marriage. Cher
asked for unspecified property
settlement and child support for
their 7-month-old son, Elijah
Blue.
Five days after she married
Allman, Cher filed for a divorce,
but they reconciled three weeks
later. Months later, Allman filed
for divorce, but another recon
ciliation followed.
Arthur Fiedler
receives honor
Arthur Fiedler, conductor of
the Boston Pops orchestra, re
ceives the National Arts Club
Medal of Honor at the group’s
21st annual music awards dinner
tonight.
Fiedler, who took over the
Boston Pops in 1930, will be cited
for establishing the orchestra as
an international institution.
Marx’s operation
is successful
Groucho Marx celebrated his
release from 19 days in a hospital,
where his right hip was replaced
with a steel and plastic joint. The
86-year-old comedian is one of
the oldest persons ever to
undergo the hip replacement op
eration, said his surgeon, Dr.
Robert Rosenfeld. Marx left
Cedars Sinai Medical Center yes
terday in a wheelchair, but
Rosenfeld said he was able to
w alk over 40 feet unaided at
home. Carroll O’Connor, TV’s
Archie Bunker, dropped by for
lunch to visit Marx. They cele
brated the operation’s success
with a belated St. Patrick’s Day
party and sang Irish songs.
A&M class of ’77
to have better
job opportunities
Employment prospects look bet
ter for some of the Class of ’77 than
they have in several years.
The outlook includes a brighten
ing picture for women, said Louis
Van Pelt, career planning and
placement director at Texas A&M
University.
Van Pelt said a national Salary
Survey conducted by the College
Placement Council revealed that
prospects may not be as good for
many graduates, particularly those
in non-technical disciplines.
The CPC survey shows 49 per
cent more job offers at the
bachelor s degree level than were
reported a year ago. Offers at the
master’s and doctoral levels went up
74 and 73 per cent respectively for
1977.
The number of salary offers to
women increased 68 per cent over
last March, after a 27 per cent gain
in 1976 over 1975. Male increases
are 45 to 20 per cent, overall, for
those two years.
Despite the gains, only one of five
offers at the bachelor’s level went to
women. That s better, however,
than a one-in-ten ratio last year.
All bachelor s degree disciplines
benefited from 1977 increases in
employer activity. Business, sci
ences and engineering job offers in
creased nearly 50 per cent. The
biggest gain was in humanities and
social sciences (70 per cent), but it
was based on small volume and fol
lowed a substantial drop in 1976.
Engineering remained most at
tractive with almost half of the offers
reported for engineering positions.
Accounting and auditing contri
buted one quarter and the remain
ing 28 per cent was divided among
21 other areas, according to the
CPC survey report.
Business employers stepped up
recruiting most, making 59 per cent
more offers. Five of 15 private
employer groups boosted activity.
Increase of 80 per cent or more oc
curred in aerospace, electronics and
instruments, automotive and
mechanical equipment, merchan
dising and services, metals and
metal products, and public utilities
and transportation.
Energy shortages reflected in the
top salaries offered at the bachelor’s
level. Petroleum engineering top
ped all other curricula with an aver
age offer of $1,508 a month. This
figure was even higher than the top
average at the master’s level. Van
Pelt said.
The CPC salary survey, in its
r. Is ’
17th year, is based on job offers, not
acceptances, made to college stu
dents during the normal September
to June recruiting period. Data are
submitted to the survey by 160 col
leges and universities throughout
the U.S.
