“Up With People” production last

The auditorium was filled with a
crowd ranging from preschoolers to
grandparents, and they all went
home with hands sore from clap
ping.
But the clapping belied some por
tions of the production.

dancers lost his place and bounced
into several other dancers causing
general confusion.
The audience didn’t seem to
mind and applauded enthusiasti
cally for that number and through
out the show, later giving the group
two standing ovations.
Audience enthusiasm was man
datory. Members of the cast went
Music Review
into the audience and grabbed indi
viduals to join them in cavorting
around the auditorium.
The whole show was constant
movement and smiles. The teeth
exhibited on stage would have made
any toothpaste commercial proud.
Apparently the production was
geared to a high school-age audi
ence. Two A&M Consolidated High
School students participated in one
song and drew cheers and applause
from many fellow students in the
crowd.
The cast, one of six “Up With
People” productions performing in
ternationally, had been to Bryan
High School and A&M Consoli
dated earlier this week.
This particular group just came
from a six-week tour in Mexico.
Each group consists of individuals
who have auditioned for members
of the cast and, if chosen, travel
with them for one year.
Anyone between 18 and 25-years
of age can try out for “Up With
People” after one of their shows.
“You don’t need to dance, you
don’t need to sing,” Will Allen, a
cast member from Long Beach,
Calif., said. “You just need good
thinking. You have to be very open
minded.”
Friction can occur between group
members, Allen said.
“In a group of 100 people — any
100 people — you’re going to have
friction,” he said.
