Aggies gain split
with Jayhawks
SAN ANTONIO — The Texas
A&M baseball team split a dou
bleheader with the Kansas Jayhawks
Monday in the Alamo City Baseball
Tournament.
The Ags took the first game 4-2.
A&M pitcher Del Leatherwood
walked seven batters, but two Ag
gie double plays helped A&M out of
several jams.
The Jayhawks won the second
game 6-5 with Aggie pitcher Mark
Ross taking his first loss of the year.
Even though Leatherwood
walked seven, he gave up only three
hits and struck out four Kansas team
members. Kyle Hawthorne finished
two-for-three with two RBIs. Bob
Dulak went one-for-two with one
RBI.
In the second game, A&M hit
three home runs, but were never
able to catch up with the Jayhawks.
Tim Feickert hit his second of the
year for 350 feet. Harry Francis, a
freshman, hit for 350 yards over the
left field fence and Buster Turner
hit a 375-yard home run.
Ross gave up 11 hits while walk
ing one and striking out three.

Ken Brett and Bart Johnson as their
top three “anything” — starters, re

Dent is one of the best shortstops
in the American League and al
though he hit .274, .264 and .246 for
the White Sox the past three years,
he has suddenly taken on some of
the aspects of the Honus Wagner
because of the Yanks’ known inter
est in him.
Prime reason for that interest is
that for all the money they went out
and spent on such free agents as
Catfish Hunter, Don Gullett and
Reggie Jackson, the Yanks still feel
insecure at shortstop.
For that reason, they’ve had two
of their scouts, Birdie Tebetts and
Gene Michael, following around the
White Sox the past few days looking
at Dent.

White Sox’ vice president have
been talking daily with Yankee Pres
ident Gabe Paul regarding Dent
and Lyle. Billy Martin doesn’t want
Lyle included in the deal, but
Veeck is insisting on the veteran
left-handed reliever.
Now other clubs are starting to
call about Dent and a deal for him
could be made at any time. When
he does leave the White Sox, he
most likely will wind up with the
Yankees, because once George
Steinbrenner makes up his mind to
get anyone he generally does. Ask
Reggie Jackson.
The Yanks have been after Dent
since before the baseball meetings
in early December and Veeck found
some added incentive to make a deal
for him when the 25-year-old Savan
nah, Ga., shortstop, who made
$50,000 last year, turned down a
three-year contract that would have
brought him $450,000.
That averages out to $150,000 a
year, are three times what Dent got
last year, but his agent, former

Bill Veeck loves ballplayers and
has always been extra generous with
them. He was the first one to say he
had no objection to talking salaries
with a player’s agent and he did that
back in 1949 when he ran the Cleve
land Indians.
Johnny Berardino, star of TV’s
long-running serial “City Hospital,”
had come over to the Indians from
the St. Louis Browns and when it
came time to sign, he asked Veeck:
“Can I bring my agent?”
Sure,” said Veeck. “Bring him
along.”
Berardino did, and came out all
right with his contract, signing for
somewhere around $40,000.
That’s what he pays his gardener
in Beverly Hills now.
