Aggies ready for state mefj
By DERBY KRENEK
Battalion News Editor
The long, grueling hours of con
centrated practice paid off. All the
practice shots and all those drops of
perspiration that come from push
ing oneself to the breaking point
now seem worthwhile.
The Texas A&M women’s basket
ball team won second at the zone
tournament this past weekend and
earned a berth in the state playoff to
be held this Thursday through
Saturday in Edinburg.
The Aggies are seeded seventh in
the competition between 16 teams.
They enter the tournament with
five team members, Sally Morisse,
Cindy Horton, Cindy Gough, Mar
garet Byrne and Beth Mamaliga,
having played at state last year. Last
year’s team did not place.
A&M faces the University of
Texas at Arlington(UTA) in the first
round Thursday at 4 p.m. UTA
came in third in East zone competi

“UTA is not a real strong team,”
coach Kay Don said. “They have
been beaten by some of the same
teams we beat, so looking at the
records I would say we have a pretty
good chance of beating them.”
Should the Aggies beat UTA,

second in the state competition and
is ranked in the top 10 in the nation.
They beat the Aggies in the zone
tournament last weekend.
“SFA is fast. They have the
height and play a tight inside
game,” coach Don said. “Were
going to have to try and make all of
our passes if we re going to have a
chance against them.”
The Aggies had difficulty com
pleting passes against SFA in the
zone tournament. They passed the
hall right into the hands of some of
the taller SFA players during sev
eral crucial plays.
“We have to cut down on our
turnovers and play our toughest de
fense,” coach Don said.
A tough defense was one of the
keys that lead the Aggies to the sec-
