Statistics indicate the emotions of
young persons in the 16- to 25-
year-old range affect their driving
behavior.
Young Americans in this age
bracket have far more than their
share of fatal accidents and 90 per
cent of the problem drivers (four or
more moving violations in a 12-
month period) are in this age
bracket.

OF 1977!
University’s Texas Transportation
Institute (TTI) have developed a
program under the direction of Dr.
Myron Koehler to help these bad
drivers stay alive long enough to be
come good old drivers.
Dr. Mark Edwards, principal in
vestigator for TTI’s project to
evaluate the effects of this program,
is in the process of analyzing the
driving histories of 2,000 Texas
problem drivers who have or will
take the course. This evaluation is
being funded by the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administra
tion so that the course can be
adopted by other states, if proven
effective.
“It’s generally accepted that driv
ers under 25 have more crashes and
more citations and, as a result, are
more dangerous than other age
groups,” Edwards said. “They are
over-represented in both fatal and
property damage accidents.
“The behavior of these young
sters in the auto and on the highway
is part of their more general be
havior. Several studies have shown
that those with repeated accidents
were more involved with cars,
drove more miles, were more aware
of social pressures and tensions, and
were more likely to use driving as
an outlet for such tensions.”
As part of the concept, after four
or more such incidents that result in
a ticket, the Department of Public
Safety (DPS) will petition the local
Justice of Peace Court to suspend
the license of the violator. The J.P.
can, as an alternative, send the of
fender to the A&M-developed train
ing program, which is being con
ducted by the DPS in the seven
Texas
ein.
