hage 10 I H b bA I lALION TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1977 SCONA STUDENT CONFERENCE ON NATIONAL AFFAIRS “THE EXPRESSION OF INDIVIDUALITY IN AMERICAN SOCIETY” SCONA CONCEPT The belief that a con cerned and informed citizenry will be better equipped to deal with the problems facing the United States, coupled with the ab sence within most university curricula of a mechanism to encourage interest in na tional issues, led to the es tablishment in 1955 of the Student Conference On Na tional Affairs (SCONA). Since its founding, SCONA has been an annual three and one half day program at Texas A&M University. It provides an opportunity to discuss issues of national concern for students repre senting universities throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. In addition it gives them an opportunity to listen to and meet with nationally recog nized spokesmen on these issues. The Conference format has been carefully struc tured to encourage open discussion and the free ex change of ideas. Each year a broad Conference theme is selected. Recognized na tional spokesmen are cho sen to provide contrasting viewpoints on the selected Conference theme. Dis cussions of the speeches and related areas are the emphasis of Round Table sessions composed of eigh teen students and two Co- Chairmen who serve to stimulate and direct dis cussions.
