A Pan American University pro
fessor believes folk healers should
be included as part of the total
health program in areas where doc
tors are few and the case load is
great.
Dr. Robert “Bob” Trotter, a cul
tural and medical anthropologist, in
a seminar at Texas A&M University,
told of the “Curandero” who acts as
psychologist, spiritualist and physi

Rio Grande Valley.
“In many cases, the United States
has not been a melting pot but

care is to be delivered to these
groups effectively, services have to
be aimed at them specifically.
“This cannot be done if health of

said. “For instance, you could speak
a language perfectly but if you do
not understand the motives and
background of those being treated,
your efforts will be almost useless.”
The Curandero folk healer can be
a very useful tool in getting health
care ideas to many of these people,
Trotter said. “It takes place in their
own social environment which re
inforces their values and relation

The Curandero is a psychologist
and conducts a lot of counseling by
reading cards, called structured fan
tasy therapy, a type of psycho
therapy that actually lets the patient
work out his own problems and
sources of stress.
Ritual sweeping with eggs, le
mons and sweet basil along with
prayers and incantations transfer
the bad vibrations. The trapped
negative waves are then burned
with the eggs and other materials.
Trotter said they found, among
the best of the folk-healers, that
their physical results were good and
the psychological results were excel
lent.
