American Music Awards presented
‘Best pop album’ goes to
United Press International
SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Elton
John, Loretta Lynn, Stevie Wonder
and Johnny Cash were the big win
ners in the fourth annual American
Music Awards last night.
John, Wonder and Miss Lynn
were double winners.
Cash was presented a distin
guished merit award by Tennesee
Gov. Leonard Blanton for his
career-long contributions to music.
John, the Briton with the spec-
downstown
tacular spectacles, took the male
pop-rock singer award, beating the
other nominees, Barry Manilow and
Peter Frampton, and shared the best
single pop recording honors with
protege Kiki Dee for “Don’t Go
Breaking My Heart.”
Miss Lynn won the top female
vocalist honors in the country cate
gory and also was part of the best
country group, teamed with Conway
Twitty.
Olivia Newton-John was named
best female pop-rock singer, over
Helen Reddy and Linda Ronstadt.
Best male country singer honors
went to Charley Pride.
In the soul category, Wonder took
the male vocalist award and his
“Songs in the Key of Life” was cho
sen best album.
Aretha Franklin was named top
female soul singer and the best
group honors went to Earth, Wind
and Fire. In the first deadlock in the
history of the awards, the top soul

Next Tuesday, February 8, is
the deadline for entering this
year’s competition in Slow Pitch
Softball, Free Throw, and Table
Tennis Singles.
Softball will begin play on
Monday, February 14 and will be
held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.,
Monday through Thursday, and
1:00 to 6:00 p.m., Saturday and
Sunday. Teams will consist of 10
players playing in a round-robin
type league with single elimina
tion playoffs. Games will be
played under ASA rules with
TAMU Intramural exceptions and
rule sheets can be picked up at
the IM Office. The three class
system will be in effect and there
are divisions for each possible
team. Managers of Softball teams
are reminded that there will be a
mandatory meeting for them on
Thursday, February 10 at 5:15
p.m. in room 701, Rudder To
wer. Schedules will be handed
out at this time and any teams
not represented will be dropped
from the rosters.
Table Tennis Singles will also
begin play on Monday, February
14 and will be held on the tables
in the basement of the MSC
from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m., Monday
through Thursday. Competition
will consist of matches of the best
2 out of 3 games to 15 with a
single elimination system being
used. There will be a fee of $35
assessed from each player by the
MSC for use of the tables and
paddles. Play will be held under
USTTA Rules, copies of which
may be picked up at the IM Of
fice. There will be the three
Class system and entrants should
check by the IM Office, DeWare
Fieldhouse, on Thursday, Feb
ruary 10 to check the schedules.
The annual IM Free Throw
Contest will be held on Wednes
day, February 9 from 8:00 to
9:00 p.m. on the main floor of G.
Rollie White Coliseum. The con
test is open to all students, facul
ty, or staff members, but all
entrants are reminded to bring
their ID cards to gain entrance to
the coliseum. The competition
should be entered using the sin
gles entry forms and will consist of
teams of 3 persons or individual
efforts. Each individual will at
tempt 20 consecutive free throws
and the individual with the
greatest number will win, with
the three man team with the
most baskets winning the team
competition. There will be IM
All-University T-Shirts awarded
to the individual and team win
ners.
Once again, the deadline for
entering any of these events will
be Tuesday, February 8 at 5:00
p.m. at the IM Office. So come
on out and get involved and have
some fun!

IM Facilities Open to
All Who are Interested
The Intramural Department
operates and maintains several
facilities across campus for the use
of students, faculty, and staff
members who want to participate
in recreational sports activities.
G. Rollie White Coliseum
houses several different sports
areas including a weightlifting
room, wrestling room, and various
basketball, volleyball, and bad
minton courts. These facilities are
available for use Monday thru Fri
day from 4:00 to 12:00 p .m. and on
Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 to
6:00 p.m. Student or faculty ID
cards are required to gain admis
sion to the gym.
DeWare Fieldhouse, located
adjacent to Kyle Field, houses
racketball and handball courts, as
well as a main basketball court.
The hours there are the same as
G. Rollie White on weekdays but
are from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
on weekends. An ID is required
for this facility also.
[The weightlifting room is the
only exception, being open on
Monday through Friday, noon to
1:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.,
and on weekends from 3:00 to 5:00
p.m.]
The Tennis Courts, located be
hind Kyle Field, are available for
use from 4:00 to 12:00 p.m. on
Monday through Friday, and all
day on the weekends. It is rec
ommended that anyone wishing
to use the tennis, racketball, and
handball courts make reservations
by calling the IM Office at 845-
2624, or by going by the office lo
cated at DeWare Fieldhouse.
