Texas A&M University scientists
. . I ve tomorrow for the Weddell Sea
c ‘ Antarctica near where another
n ° n ^ iearch team is on station in the
ake Passage.
The Drake Passage group is
heided by Dr. Worth Nowlin and
B ll be aboard the Scripps Institute
fl Oceanography research vessel
“Melville. They are studying the
cirrents through the passage and
tl 5 interaction between sea and air.
| The oceanographic expedition
ill be headed by chief scientist Dr.
y Franceschini. Dr. Satoru
Taguchi, a post-doctoral fellow, and
three graduate students, working
under the direction of the principal
investigator Dr. Sayed Z. El-Sayed,
will be collecting valuable data from
this little known ice-infested sea.
They will join the U.S. Coast
Guard icebreaker “Burton Island”
at Ushuaia, Argentina, the
southern-most city of the world.
The team will study primary pro
ductivity and the phy si cal/chemical
factors which control productivity in
the Weddell Sea. The sea is thought
to produce the cold water that fills
the deep basins of the world’s
oceans.
Franceschini will carry out
studies to determine the amount of
solar radiation available to ocean
plant life (phytoplankton). As chief
scientist he will also coordinate the
various aspects of this scientific ef
fort.
Taguchi will look at life systems in
the ocean and how much photosyn-
thetically active radiation is made
available to plants.
The ship was delayed in reaching
Ushuaia because of the heavy ice
encountered in January.

the State Commission on Highways
and Public Transportation who has
been associated with the agency 48
years, appealed yesterday to the
legislature for assistance. He said a
proposal endorsed by Gov. Dolph
Briscoe to guarantee the agency ^
$561 million in revenue from sales
taxes on auto parts, tires and acces
sories during the next two years is
essential.
The highway bill was the first
major part of the governor’s legisla
tive program to be considered by a
legislative committee, and it at
tracted a crowd. The start of the
hearing was delayed 45 minutes
while the Transportation Commit
tee moved from a packed small
hearing room to a larger one, and
testimony continued late into the
night.
Energy hotline service
assists manufacturers
Texas manufacturers now can
obtain energy information and
assistance with energy problems
by calling the manufacturers’
energy “hot line” at Texas A&M
University. The number is 713-
845-3628.
This new service was initiated
in mid-January and is a program
of the federally assisted Energy
Advisory Service for Texas
(EAST), part of the Center for
Energy and Mineral Resources
at A&M.
Dr. Leonard Hale, an A&M
mechanical engineering profes
sor who is responsible for coor
dinating EAST’s services for
manufacturers, said that advisory
service staff members will be
available to discuss all types of
energy problems with Texas
manufacturers.
Energy advisory service per
sonnel will send manufacturers
appropriate available informa
tion and will attempt to locate
other requested information. If
the inquiry involves a relatively
simple problem, an analysis will
be performed by the advisory
staff. In addition, if other man
ufacturers are having or have had
similar problems, an information
sharing activity will be coordi
nated for manufacturers, said
Hale.
Manufacturers seeking energy
information or assistance should
call between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30
p.m. Monday through Friday.
