Whitley is favorite THE BATTALION Page 15 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 26, 1977 Jackson Lombardi finalist All glory is fleeting David Shipman (No. 25) has become a forgot ten man in Aggieland. The senior quarter- jack from Odessa was in the starting role be- bre being replaced by David Walker. Ship- man’s duties following the Texas Tech game were limited to holding the extra points and field goal attempts. The last eight games of the season he appeared in only one game, and that was because Walker was shaken-up. "Last year I had many more tackles than I did this year. But this season I contributed more to the team all year long by drawing double teams.” The Pitt Panthers, because of play like Romano’s, won the na tional championship with a 12-0 record. The other three finalists, Ross Browner of Notre Dame, Robert Jackson of Texas A&M and Wilson Whitely of Houston, also had outstanding seasons. A spokesman for the committee which will award the Lombardi trophy tomorrow night said school- work prevented Browner, a junior, from arriving in Houston before to day. Browner, should he win, would be the first non-senior to be awarded the trophy in seven years. Nevertheless, he is the favorite be- casue he already has been voted the Outland Trophy. The Outland and Lombardi, al though voted on by different groups, are awarded annually to the outstanding college lineman. “All three of the guys who are here had great years, Jackson said. Jackson is the middle linebacker who led the Aggies to a Sun Bowl victory. “I had a real good year. But I’ll let the people who voted on it decide it,” he said. Whitely, the 6-3, 268-pound de fensive tackle, said he was pleased just to be in the final four. “I’m glad to be a part of some thing that is as beneficial as this,” he said. The $100-a-plate dinner will benefit the American Cancer Soci ety. “This is going to help each one of us. This is beautiful, Whitely said. A spokesman said the dinner and awards ceremony will allow the sponsoring Rotary Chib to present the medical research group with $130,000. Present tomorrow night will be former President Gerald R. Ford, his wife Betty, comedian Bob Hope and Mrs. Marie Lombardi, widow of former player and coach Vince Lombardi. The trophy is topped by a 40- pound block of granite and in scribed with the word, “Dedica tion.” It is given in honor of Lom bardi, one of Fordham University’s Seven Blocks of Granite and a suc cessful coach with the Green Bay Packers. Romano, Whitely and Jackson were to tour the Astrodome yester day and that night to be guests at the Houston Aeros-Winnipeg Jets pro hockey game. Browner is expected to join them today for a tour of NASA space cen ter. Aggie tankers take two dual meets Texas A&M’s women swimmers, riding the wake of last week’s victory over Texas, came back once again to take two dual meets this weekend. In the Friday night opener at Rice, Carol Hemphill led the women with three first place finishes in a 50-38 win. The men’s team, also victorious at the meet, captured eight out of 11 events in their 61-33 decision. Saturday at P.L. Downs Natatorium, the Aggies hosted Texas at Arlington in what turned out to be a cliff-hanger for the men. Coming down to the last event, the 400-yard free relay, Chris Shipp, Greg Meek, Roger Lien, and Yates edged out UTA in the race to secure a 56-55 victory. The women swam away with the meet in their division defeating UTA 98-4. Jennie Hicks set a school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle. This was the 17th school record set in the first three meets this year. Next on the slate for the tankers is a dual meet with TCU here, tomor row at 4 p.m. The men’s and wo men’s teams will travel to Baton Rouge to take on a tough LSU squad Saturday. RESULTS: A&M VS.
